being told to maintain at 1100?...

I'm 5'7 and 113lbs.

Today I went to the doctor's to talk to her about my dieting, she has already told me Im underweight for my height, I don't want to focus this post about that but more the fact I asked her how many calories I should be consuming just to maintain my current weight and she said about 1100? I'm really confused because I thought it would be a hell of a lot more than that and surely I'd keep on losing weight from eating that amount?

Did she explain to you how she arrived at that figure?

I'd be interested in knowing how she got that number. Based on your stats alone, your BMR is roughly around 1300 which is not a number you maintain on.

You're still trying to lose according to your info even though you're underweight, maybe she's trying to get you to up your calories gradually from something low (I'm not sure how much you're eating at the moment) to get you to a safe amount for you eventually. Also, do you have any other health issues? Because that could be something to do with it.

I'm not having a go at you for trying to lose still by the way, that's your choice. I just think maybe that has something to do with her choice, she may be trying to ease you into eating more.

Boom. It's too early for me and you nailed something spot on. Great catch!

I'm not still trying to lose, I reached my target goal a few days ago I've just not updated it on here yet until my 'official' weigh in day. I asked and she literally just said about 1100 and hadn't gone into detail, I wasn't sure if maybe she's not that knowledgeable in that field as all she could say was I was underweight instead of going into depth about calories etc
  • What does MFP say you need to eat to maintain? Whatever it is i do not think it is 1100 that is just way to low

I agree, I'd say at least 1200. But you're lookin' good as it is.

Even 1200 is too low for someone trying to maintain, with an estimated BMR that she has, 1550-1600 is her maintenance calories and that doesn't include if she is exercising. If she is exercising it's probably closer to 2000

Yes, you will still lose on 1100 or 1200. Plug your numbers into MFP for maintenance and follow them. If you keep losing, up them a little more.

Doctors do not know very much about nutrition. PERIOD. Doctors know how to write prescriptions.

Ask a nutritionist. Or listen to people on MPF who know how to maintain.
