Big loss followed by gain?

My weightloss has not been linear at all. I’ve been following almost the same diet and routine for three months now- some weeks I will lose 1 kilo, another I will lose 200grams, and another I might gain weight.
I had been sitting on 78.9kilos for three weeks (and getting very frustrated) when last week the scale dropped to 77.4. Today, a week later, I have jumped on the scales and I am sitting at 78.0.
Does this happen to anyone else? A large loss followed by a gain or no lose the following week?

water weight fluctuations usually are the cause. Is your goal set a 1 lb/week?0

almost always.....Hit a new low, bounce back up a pound is pretty normal for me.0

Watch your sodium intake and drink lots of water to keep your system flowing correctly. It is most likely just water weight as mentioned before. The body can fluctuate everyday.0

It won't be linear. Sometimes it'll sit there. Just hang in there through the frustrating parts.0

Yep. As others mentioned, water weight is a main cause for this, whether it's due to the amount of sodium you're eating compared to the water you're drinking, or TOM, etc. It's frustrating at the time but it helps me to look at the overall trend at the end of the month. Last month, my weight bounced like crazy and I was irritated with myself, but at the end I had a net loss of 4 lbs- not spectacular but overall I was going in the right direction and that was comforting.0

A change in your exercise routine or a switch to a more intense workout may make a difference. Calorie staggering has worked for me. That's when you take the calories you're allowed per day, add them up for the week, and fluctuate during the week how many calories you eat each day, some higher than usual, some low all to balance out to the weekly goal. It confuses your body and breaks through a plateau.0

Yep. Every week is different for me. Here's an example. Last week I lost 6 lbs, this week I'm back up 3. I try to not get frustrated and look at overall trends instead. It's usually water weight, as others have said.0

Same as above, water weight, sodium, even muscle holding more water after hard exercise. I found that there were stagnation periods, once you break through 2-3lbs disappears very quickly. Just hang in there, dont do anything drastic or get discouraged. If your exercises have plateaud, switch them up - you get more efficient at doing the same routines and burn less on them. Good luck!0

My weight jumps around, too. It would be nice if it stayed the same everyday and then went down on the day we weigh in but it just doesn't happen that way. It's challenging but we have to learn not to get overly emotional about the fluctuations or it'll drive us crazy.0

If I weight myself day to day, I get huge fluctuations. A lot of that is just water weight. Working out, strength training, etc will also make you hold on to water. The suggestion to fix it is to actually drink more water.0
