Maintenance after dropping 1-2 BMI points?

Although I have another 45 lbs to lose before maintenance, I have been researching healthy weight loss and maintenance.
I came across a suggestion that weight loss is better maintained long-term if you lose 1-2 BMI points then eat to stay at that weight for 'several' weeks. After the 'several' weeks you begin eating to lose again and repeat the process until you get to your goal weight.
Losing weight this way is also supposed to reset your BMR, so you don't end up maintaining at your goal weight eating about 80% of what someone who never lost weight can eat and maintain at.
Has anyone found research to back this up? Has anyone followed this suggestion for weight loss?
