Social events

Does anybody else dread going out socialising?! Before I started on here and watching what I eat I loved going out for dinner, drinking etc and seeing my friends. Now I really want to go out but I DREAD the thought of going for a meal and not knowing how many calories I'm having or having to watch my friends drinking (even if it it just soda) knowing that I can't justify doing the same. I workout everyday and usually have calories left over, but I worry that I will just binge and fall off the wagon. Please say others feel the same! It will help my will power

Try to steer your friends to places that have healthy options and post calorie info. Decide what you will order before you go and stick to it. Restaurants are not as hard for me as parties - resisting potato chips is an impossibility for me!

Was just having the same thought. Our friends keep asking us to sign up for the Spring adult kickball league and last year when I joined all they do is drink, play, and then drink more at a bar when the games are over! This goes one every week for 7 weeks.

I'm having such a hard time deciding on whether or not I join. I could easily sign up and drink only water which I'm perfectly fine doing.....it's the after part of staying away from the bars. I wish these "friends" were more understanding of my new life changes but our favorite past times always involved booze.

i actually look forward to it because i dont get to do it often anymore - and i dont stress about the calories. i either make sure to exercise more that day or just eat a bit less during the day and plan out what im going to have while at the bar/party/whatever. sometimes i stick to the plan, sometimes i dont. but i get back to it the next day and make it work

I don't know that I dread it, but I have certainly accepted the fact that I can't just go out and order whatever "fried", "loaded", "covered" or "smothered" foods that I used to, lol. I've gotten to the point where I don't have a problem asking for grilled meat instead of pan-fried or deep fried - or for sauce/dressing/condiments on the side or for substitutions as needed. I'll drink a glass of water with every adult beverage to slow me down and I've switched to lower calorie beverages.

For me, being successful has to be about incorporating healthier habits into my day-to-day, not going cold-turkey on things I enjoy. And, occasionally, I just let myself have a splurge day!

It certainly is challenging but it doesn't have to be a disaster. Drinking isn't really my thing so I'm perfectly fine drinking unsweetened iced tea but I will occasionally have a lower calorie boozy drink. I try to focus on the social aspect of it and not view it as a reason to hog down. You may be able to enjoy your night out a little more if you get a workout in and eat light throughout the day. We can't just stop going out. We just need to change the way we think about it and plan accordingly. Go out and have a good time!

Do a ton of exercise that day, then go out and enjoy yourself. Try to guestimate the calories in meals and pick something that seems healthy-ish.

You're not supposed to give up your life to diet. If this is making you DREAD social events, you might need to adjust your mindset about it. Getting healthier is supposed to be about living life to the fullest and enjoying your life MORE not less.

Yup, this :) It takes a bit of getting used to, but you'll get there. Enjoying yourself one day won't undo all the work you've done ;) Just remember to re-start the next day! I understand the worry about falling off the bandwagon, but get someone to remind you - or set up reminders by sticking notes on your mirror, whatever it is - you just need to get back the next day and then you'll realise you can do this. You can workout, get healthy and still enjoy your social life (with drinks and all that) :D

Thanks guys. I made sure to get my exercise in before I went out, stuck to water and had one coke zero. Came to eating and due to a major lack of veggie options I had to get pizza. I thought it would stress me more than it did but I ate it, enjoyed it and know that today I will just be more careful with what I'm eating! It was worth it because I had a great time with my friends :)

I practice intermittent fasting so when I'm going out (or even going to family's house for dinner) I make sure that it is one of my fasting days so that I can go out relatively stress free and enjoy myself.

if i'm going to a restaurant i look at their menu online and work out lower calorie options so that i can plan the rest of my intake/output that day to accommodate for it :)

Most places have a lower cal menu section, I would just go and have fun.
be carefull because counting cals and not wanting to eat because of fear of weight gain can be abit of a food/ controll issue, don't let food dominate your life.

I still love going out, and we do so often!

    1) eat at home before you go out. Then you a) aren't tempted to eat crap and b) have a legitimate excuse to not order any crap!
    2) you can still drink, but drink lower calorie drinks. I LOVE dark beer. LOVE! But, I've really cut that out, and now I'll have a vodka and soda. I drink slowly, and order a large water. You don't have to drink to socialize, and it's easier to do than you might think! It's pretty entertaining to stay sober and sit back and watch the circus ;)
