...is hard. Maybe it's just being a 20 year old, but every time I've tried to diet, I lose quickly the first week and then stop or even gain back weight (even when sticking to the same diet), so I just want to give up. (It might be a personal characteristic of wanting things done, and wanting them done yesterday... ha)

MFP has been so helpful though and so inspiring.
I'd love to know what others did/do to stay patient and keep motivated when you experience setbacks.

it's not easy - I love instant results, but thenI remind myself that I didn't gain 40 lbs in a week, so I'm not going to lose then in a week either! Lots of little goals, even if it's just to get through the day and avoid the hershey kisses (my downfall) :)

I also only weigh myself once a week, that makes me feel better when I see a loss, then getting on the scale everyday and not always seeing a change, which is frustrating!

Stick with it, make some friends here for support, you'll do fantstic and it'll be worth it.

I have been in the exact same situation. I have officially stared my dieting and working out on Monday, and have really stuck to it. I think that my biggest motivation is just how unhappy with myself I am. Every time that I think about eating something like cookies or ice cream (my absolute weaknesses), I think about how unhappy I am. So I have felt really good this week since I've been really good about what I've been eating, and I have worked out every day.

Everybody has different motivation. You just have to really commit to your change and find what motivates you!

Don't give up!! It is sooo true that we didn't gain this weight in a week so we shouldn't expect it to disappear in one!! I, like you, want everything done yesterday, which isn't very practical with weight loss, but as long as I know I am doing what I am supossed to be doing and making the right choices I know it will eventually pay off and for me it has!!! So please do not give up, we are all here to support you! Not sure if it helps but, I don't view this a a diet for me it is a lifestyle change, that way if I decide to splurge I don't need to feel guilty (which will probably lead to more overeating anyway!) I just get up the next day and start fresh. Lifestyle changes are for "life" so not a temporary fix, cause we all know that dieting may help lose the weight but it won't help you keep it off!! Hang in there, we have all been where you are, trust me!! :flowerforyou:
