measuring calories by volume?

What are people's thoughts about measuring calories by the volume the food takes up in a container? I heard that they do that in Japan with the bento boxes that 500ml container will hold 500 calories worth of food. Granted that Japanese food is not as oily as American food. But I eat mostly home cooked asian food that are cooked without oil.

i don't know that much about it, but i would think weighing your food to find out it's mass (as many packaged foods give calorie totals for how many grams of food and not by volume) is a better way to determine how many calories you are preparing.

I don't think that logic pans out...pun intended.

If you had the same portion of a container or salad versus a container of chicken, the calories are completely different. Same among many foods. Caloric density for foods varies too much by weight to just go by size. At least, as I see it.

mass is far more logical than volume
