I love to eat couscous instead of rice once in awhile. When I went to put to amount in my food data base I was shocked to see how many calories were in it. I know I am allowed to have 1 cup of couscous (I cook it in chicken broth and nothing else). 1/4 cup is 150 calories. It bothered me so much I went online to find out the actual amount of calories it has. Well low and behold the dry weight has more calories then cooked weight. 1 cup of cooked couscous is only 176 calories. Yip yip yippy! I put it on the data base if anyone else is interested and were afraid of eating a cup of delicious couscous.:flowerforyou:

that's because couscous is basically pasta (its made of semolina). Pasta also has more calories for 1 cup dry than 1 cup cooked because it expands when it cooks
  • its a great alternative though! great with broth like you did and added veggies. thanks for adding to data base, I will get some next shopping trip.

You learn something new everyday! ;) Thanks, both of you. I guess I will add couscous to my diet.

I did know that it expands when it cooks. But the data base has it calorie-wise as dry not cooked. So if someone wanted to eat couscous and clicked on the data base they would get the incorrect calorie count.:drinker:

Since it is a pasta...try the whole wheat version.
Also a great alternitive is quinoa (a whole grain and a compleate protein).

I remember from my WW days that couscous was less points than rice.
