I never counted calories with the South Beach diet, but the diet wasn't very satisfying. Now I eat regular food that the whole family enjoys and count the calories.

After I had my daughter and my second ankle surgery, I did the WW Core plan which involves not counting calories for foods that are nutrient dense but not calorie dense. If you choose to eat calorie dense foods (things like bacon, white breads, etc...) you have a weekly limit so you would count those calories. I lost 50+ pounds (in 6 months).

I hit a weight that was comfortable and kind of just quit going. I maintained that weight for about 4 years (without counting calories still) then I moved and a whole bunch of stuff happened and I gained back about 20 pounds (which I also maintained for about a year).

Then I decided I needed to get serious about hitting my goal weight and started counting calories (lost 24 lbs) then I found MFP and here I am, basically following the same principles that helped me lose that 50 lbs and trying to get to my UGW (but also counting calories this time, since I'm not going to WW meetings, I feel like this keeps me accountable).

I don't plan to count calories anymore once I hit my goal weight unless my weight starts going up. I have pretty good faith in my ability to maintain my weight.
