Food label and nutrient info

Are calorie and nutrient labels on packaged foods giving information ONLY for the package contents or for the entire food prepared per the package instructions? I'm thinking the former but want to confirm. Thanks.

In my experience, if the info is for the made-up product it will say "when prepared as directed" or something similar

I thought it's usually stated on the box.
  • Mostly for the package contents only but some, like hamburger helper, give info for both. Depends on the food manufacturer, I guess.
  • For example, on a box of macaroni and cheese it might say "as packaged: 200 calories, when prepared as directed: 250 calories". It will generally make that distinction. Otherwise, I'd assume it's just listing the calories for the package.
