Starting working out.

I will be joining the gym once I get paid on Sunday, I haven't worked out in YEARS and I don't even know where to start.
I am about 120lbs over weight and want to just start with some cardio but I don't know where to start or what to do to make the most out of it. Any one have an resources on how to figure out which exercise is best for you or anything like that?

Check your library for New Rules of Lifting For Women and incorporate weight-lifting along with some cardio. That way you'll retain as much lean body mass as possible while reducing fat mass.

    ^^yep,

Re cardio - start off slow, and build your endurance up and don't get discouraged. Something low impact at first would probably best, like the elliptical or walking on the treadmill.

Walking and weights are a great way to get started. I also did yoga and since I started with 130lbs to lose, it wasn't pretty!

I'm down 110lbs and now running, circuit training, and weights are my exercise regime.

Set realistic goals, be accountable to yourself (or if you need the external support, others, including here), reward yourself (not with food) for victories on the non-scale variety, and don't fret if you gain weight by exercising every now and then!

Good luck! You CAN do this!

ETA- since you are joining the gym- ask one of the trainers for advice!
  • A lot of gyms will also set up one free session with a personal trainer (in hopes that you'll use them more afterwards) and they can give you a basic plan to start with.

Elliptical machines are a good machine for beginners too, since you determine the intensity and speed by how fast you pedal.
