Bruising under big toenails from running?

I just started including jogging intervals in with my walking, and around the same time, noticed dark brown at the bottom, inner corners of my big toe toenails.

Could it be bruising from the jogging? Has this happened to anyone else?

It's worse on my left toe, and kind of looks like the melanoma that can develop under the nail, so I am kind of worried. But noticed it occurring on my right toe too, though the shape and color is a bit different.

Thanks!

My husband got that when he used to play netball and changed speed rapidly......physio recommended he change shoes...he changed from Nike with a smaller toe box area to a wider fitting new balance (wider toe box) before the problem stopped.
His actually got so bad with the bruising that he lost a toenail (it grew back eventually).
So long story short....I would get the fit of your running shoes checked.

Shoes are too tight. Quite common.

This happened to me as well. I lost the toenail. It took a year to grow back!!! My shoes we too tight. I got new shoes and now I run all the time with no problem. Good luck!!

Very common for runners. Even if your shoes seem to fit well, your feet might swell more when you get to longer distances (happened to me once I started hitting 8-9 miles, especially if it was hot out). You can even get t-shirts/bumperstickers that say: Toenails Are For Sissies!

Oh no! I don't want to lose a toenail just months before my wedding!! haha

I'm on a tight budget, but I guess I better pick up some new shoes. :)

Hint: if you do lose the nail, just paint the empty spot. People aren't going to be looking that closely at your toes, anyway.
