Haitus hernia and exercise?

I have had a haitus hernia for years and take acid inhibitors - usually do not suffer any problems, but since upping my exercise regime, I have been suffering from pain in my sternum and now bad acid reflux. Does anyone else have this problem, and any suggestions on what could help to prevent the pain and reflux?
Treadmill running seems be be the worst cause, (6 mph for about 3 miles only) but I don't really want to give up.
(Sorry if TMi!)
