So since August I've been down and out. Broke my ankle and then had some other medical issues that didn't allow me to workout and had to maintain my weight. But now that everything is back to normal ( or as normal as can be) I don't know where to start. I used to run/walk daily, do zumba, etc. We have just moved to a new town and I joined a gym. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to start back up. What should I set my calorie intake to?? Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

the most important thing is to get in at least a half hr of exercise 6 days a week....the knowing how many calories and what to eat will come naturally to u when u start exercising. I find that whenever i try to diet and restrict myself to certain foods i fail and dread the exercise i have to do for the diet. Its all about mind set. congrats on starting over youll do great0

Thanks I appreciate it. It's just hard knowing where to start especially in a new town.0

I worked on losing weight last year mostly by counting calories using MFP and by doing cardio at least three times a week. Since January I've been going to the gym 3 times a week with a friend and have added strength training. We'll alternate between major groups of muscles: back, legs, shoulders, and arms. We also do ab exercises every trip to the gym too. My friend uses ActivTrax through our local gym and I just do the workouts along with her. You might see if the gym offers a similar program or has trainers who can give you an idea of where to start with different exercises. I also found an app for smartphones called Workout Trainer from Skimble. That offers some good workout routines for home or the gym. It includes pictorial explanations of the moves and sometimes videos too.0

Having a friend to work out with has made a big difference. It might be hard to come by a workout buddy since you've just moved, but maybe you can find someone to workout with nearby?0

Hi,
I am also just now rebounding from knee surgery, and wish you the best of luck!
I just recently started to use the TDEE/BMR method and absolutely love it!
It let's me eat to my fill (!!!!!) and also makes me very aware of what I am putting in my body!
I was referred to the "spreadsheet" which does all the calculations for you (you just need to put in your exercise amounts for the week, and it calculates the net amount of calories you should be eating.
You can download it from here:
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/heybales/view/spreadsheet-ver-3-for-bmr-tdee-deficit-calcs-macro-calcs-hrm-zones-426221
I generally stick to the "simple setup" tab because it is straight forward. I may go into it a bit more and tweak it once I have lost more weight, however for now I am sticking to that!
Good luck!0 -
Thanks for the reply thats a great suggestion! I might go to a couple gym classes and see how that is.0
