I usually eat it on a whole wheat pita with a little bit of feta cheese, tomato, and spinach.
It's delicious0 -

I am a hummus addict! It's one of my favorite foods. Something I just learned is that it's surprisingly good on baked potatoes.0
-
It's good on anything.
I used to have it for my snack spread on crackers.
I cant have it around.
For me it is a trigger food.
I would drink the whole container.
I would love to find a nice lower fat version that I could easily make myself.
Anybody?
It's funny, I can walk by a plate of cookies or a bowl of candy or a chocolate pie all day but not a container of hummus.
or a twice baked potato for that matter.0 -
I love to use it as a base in wraps  SO yummy. Now I'm wishing I hadn't finished my tub the other day. :sad:0

I'm glad I found this post. I've just started eating hummus but I only have it with veggies. I was just about to google what I could do with it.0

Can of chickpeas (I can't be doing with soaking them)
0% fat Greek yogurt 2-3 tablespoons
juice of half a lemon
1-2 cloves of Garlic if you wish
a handful of fresh flat parsley
1/2 teaspoon of cumin & 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder (optional)
sea salt flakes & fresh ground black pepper to taste
Wiz all that in a blender or smoothie maker check the consistency, add a teaspoon or two of water if needed.
Taste, add more lemon/seasoning if you like (watch the salt!)
I then put Extra virgin olive oil in mine, but it is not necessary if your real tight on calories.
*goes home from work to scoff his left over hummus*0 -
Think of all the ways you use dip, mayo, cheese, or sour cream ... and try hummus instead.
Here is my recipe
1 15 oz can of chickpeas (drain it well)
1/2 cup yogurt (I use soy but you can use any other nonfat or lowfat yogurt)
1 tbs lemon juice
2 tsp minced garlic (i get the stuff in the jar)
1/2 tbs cumin (I'll also add 1/2 tbs thyme when I'm in the mood)0 -
I have never tried hummus, although I would like to.
I have it on my grocery list but notice many different brands & flavors.
Any suggestions, or recommendations? of brand names that are good or flavors?
I dont want to buy one that is crappy then be turned off of it forever.
Thanks !

Thanks!
Is there a way to make it without the yogurt?0 -
Thanks!

Yes, I make mine with tahini or olive oil instead of the yogurt.
Tahini is ground seseme seeds0 -
Hmmm. I wonder which is better.
OO would sure be cheaper.0 -
For my homemade hummus I just use:
Can of Chickpeas (rinsed and try to get that thin skin layer off, it usually comes off when you rinse them)
Juice of 1 Lemon
Drizzle of Olive Oil
Garlic
I used to always use Tahini in my hummus, but once I was out and made it without and it turned out just as good, if not better. Plus that takes away some of the fat and calories.0 -
Thanks!

Vegetable broth works too ... between 1/4th cup to 1/2 cup depending on how thick you want it ... at least for those of you who don't want the extra fat and calories that come with using tahini and/or olive oil. I'll use chicken broth but only if it's fresh (from cooking my own pot of chicken).0 -
thanks for the recipes everyone0

Hummus IMO is fairly healthy as is. Not sure how to make it much healthier than what you can get in the store. However, it is very easy to make:
Can of drained garbanzo beans
A bit of evoo to the consistency you want the hummus
roasted red peppers, garlic, chives, tomatoes, nuts, pine nuts, capers, etc. Add in whatever veggies you like. Roasted are the best as they are soft already.
I am sure you could forgo the evoo already. I wonder if you perhaps you added a bit of almond or soy milk to it instead and see how that fairs? I would be leary to add cow milk or a milk that spoils easily though.
You can also use white beans in it too for a creamier consistency.0 -
Hmmm never would have thought to add yogurt to it. Interesting...will have to try that next time I make it. I too never use tahini and it turns out just as zesty and delicious.0
