What's everyone giving up for lent?

I have never given something up for lent before and I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions/ideas?

  • I am giving up alcohol. Not that hard to do since I have discovered that beer all of a sudden gives me a horrible headache after just 1 bottle. And I do love a good craft beer.

I'm so sorry to see all the mocking responses to your question about giving up something for Lent. A better place to pose a question like this would be on the group "Catholics Unite," where you will get answers from people who are trying to live their faith and grow in their love of God.

To your question, the three pillars of Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. So, you could possibly choose to set aside a certain time in the day for prayer or meditation or reading the Bible. If you are like me, you are already at minimal calories, so you could instead fast from a particular food (one person I know is fasting from wine) or you could fast for a particular time during the day. (I love late-night snacking, so during Lent I'll give up eating during that time. I'll still eat the same amount...it wouldn't be safe to do less...but I will eat earlier and refrain from the late-night munchies.) Or it could be fasting from some other type of indulgence you enjoy (going to the movies, whatever...) Almsgiving, for the glory of God, to charitable efforts. This could be your parish, a food bank, whatever...Optimally, if you give up some expensive indulgence (say the movies each week or something like that) you would use that savings to do your almsgiving.

God loves all of our efforts. So start where you feel comfortable and each year try to grow in your Lenten devotion.
