Weight loss tips anyone?

Im new to this whole weight loss thing and no matter how frustrated I get with not seeing the results I want to see in a fast time Im trying to remain healthy throughout my journey. I am 24 years old about 5'11-6'0 and weigh around 250-255lbs. My lowest weight was in highschool I was about 150-160 and my highest weight was 268 in decemeber of 2012 and thats when I decided that I could NOT be fat anymore and started my lifestyle change.

I researched online found blogs etc and have been drinking a gallon of water or atleast 72-96oz a day, clean eating no processed foods etc and Im trying to ease my way into exercising. I want to lose atleast 60lbs by the end of june but Im not sure if thats possible right now since I cant workout as much as I want to due to transportation issues and money. Of course there have been days where I ate out but I always get right back to my healthy eating. And then there are some days where I dont want to eat or I dont eat as much thinking the weight will fall off and sometimes t does sometimes it doesnt.

If anyone has any tips for me or any advice I would greatly appreciate it thank you. Oh yea and I only want to consume 1200 calories a day.

This kind of stood out for me:

" Im not sure if thats possible right now since I cant workout as much as I want to due to transportation issues and money. Of course there have been days where I ate out but I always get right back to my healthy eating. "

It sounds like you're already making excuses for your failure before it's even happened!

This site will tell you lots of advice - what exercise to do, what to eat, what not to eat - but only you can follow it, and be strict with yourself. The best piece of advice the PT at my gym gave me was "I can tell you what to do, but I can't do it for you".

No such thing as transportation issues causing you to not work out, your legs are a method of transport! Try running, biking, starjumps on the spot even! You don't have to have a gym membership to work out. Also I would strongly encourage you to try and keep to the healthy eating even when you're out, or all those days off it just add up and get in the way of your progress. If you really want it, and accept that sometimes it's tough but carry on anyway, you can do it!

I agree with the above posted. You do not have to have a gym membership to be fit and healthy. You can take nice walks and work yourself into a job. You can do jumping jacks, situps etc in your own living room. If you check youtube you can find all kinds of workout videos for free. Start with something simple like Leslie Sansone walking and work your way into things like turbo fire, zumba etc. Next time you go to walmart or target or what ever discount store you have, go through their health/exercise department. You can pick up an inexpensive pedometer for around 10.00 or a workout DVD for about the same price.

As for the actual healthy eating department. Sounds like you are doing pretty well. Limiting processed foods is a good thing. Water is another good thing. Keep coming to the boards for support and motivation. You are not alone in this journey. We each have our own goals and our own reasons for being here so just jump right in

Frankly if you're 250+, you could eat a lot more than 1200 cals to lose weight and then just adjust down as needed vs starting at 1200 cals

I can't afford a gym membership, either. Even if I could, I know that I wouldn't go as often as I should. But you know what's just as good? Look up "aerobics" on YouTube and you will find a ton of videos you can start working out along with. It's free, so you don't have to pay $59.99 for a whole stack of DVDs, and it will get you motivated in the privacy of your own home.

    Totally agree with this post.

OP, you didn't get as heavy as you are in 4 months. Please be realistic about how quickly you can take the weight off. You are talking about wanting to lose approx 4 lbs per week. Certainly doable but at what risk.

1,200 cals seems WAY extreme for your starting weight. I suspect that what you will accomplish by your current plan is to put your body in to metabolic arrest where it will really start to shut down processing food and go in to extreme self preservation mode. This is NOT a good state to be in and you will accomplish teh exact REVERSE of what you want to do.

Being HEALTHY should be your #1 focus:
    * Get to a healthy daily calorie deficit where you loss a pound or two a week
    * increase the QUALITY of the food/fuel that you consume
    * Get in to a pattern of exercise and activity. I suspect that, with your weight gain, you have become pretty sedentary. Start out with long walks. They are free. start doing some weight training.
    * Get a group of friends that can provide you encouragement. Do NOT surround yourself with people that are going to try to pull you down.

    Good luck.

It sounds like you are going for the all or nothing approach.

At six feet tall, 1200 is wayyyyy too low for you. That is for women who are on the shortish size: the "average" woman who is around 5'4. Even a lot of us eat more than that.

Walking is free, as are many of the other options listed by previous posters. Just promise yourself to move with intention ten minutes every day. You can add more next week.

The fact he is a 6 foot male that weighes 250-260 and eating only 1200 calories didn't stand out to you? hehe

Exercise is not required for weight loss but will help you. But what you cant do for sustained weight loss is deprive your body. If you were a 5'0 female who weighed 100 pounds, 1200 would be ok....but for your size you should be around 2000 calories a day.

Are you looking to get down to 190ish by June 2013? That is a hefty goal, the first thing you should realize is that this isn't a fast paced thing...the quicker you realize that, the less dissapointment you are going to have. Since you are very overweight, you will probably drop 3-4 pounds a week at first, but once you get to about 20 away, its going to slow down to roughly 1 a week. I would say that a reasonable timetable for you to shoot for would be December 2013.
  • If you exercise each day you can eat more than 1200. It is so freakin hard to eat only 1200 calories! I am 116 lbs and 1200 makes me feel like I'm starving. So exercise! I find that I benefit from stopping eating 2 to 3 hours before bedtime. At night your metabolism slows down so it is no good to consume unnecesary calories close to bedtime. Good luck!

Walking is free. Do it 30 minutes each day, and you'll start to see results. Keep increasing your time, and the weight will drip off. If you don't have time during the day to walk, get up earlier, and do it first thing in the morning. there are no excuses.

Thanks EVERYONE for all the advice. Im going to stop "starving" myself and eat more but in healthy portions, and most definitely start exercising more and being more active. Starting with walking for atleast 30mins a day and I also have a rockin body workout dvd that I like.

  • I am in a similar situation, but feel I have to start somewhere. I think you have set your goals too high. This website, after I entered my vital statistics, told me how many calories & how much I would lose in a certain length of time, & I am going with that. Walking is probably the best thing you can do to start - 10 minutes/day & work up from there. Instead of going out & buying weights, use a couple cans of soup, do a few bends & stretches. You will eventually get there. And when you eat out, skip the spuds & breads, etc, & don't feel guilty. Sounds like you don't do that often enough to make much of a difference, anyway. Bet you CAN do it.:flowerforyou:

My weight loss tips, based on what works for me:

    1. Eat your veggies!! Plenty of them and a variety.
    2. Don't eat low fat. Moderate fat is healthier and tastier.
    3. Don't eat foods you don't like. There are enough healthy foods that anyone can lose weight while eating foods they enjoy.
    4. Don't eat too few calories. Obviously you need a deficit, but don't eat so low that you are miserable.
    5. Exercise regularly. Find an exercise you enjoy and do it often. Just MOVE.
    6. Don't stress. Not over a "bad" (high calorie) day, or missing exercise, or too many/few <whatever>. You WILL have those bad days. Just relax, put it behind you and get back on track. It's okay not to be perfect. Just be good.

Note: Exercise requires no money. Your body is all you need. Walk, run, jump, climb, push, pull, lift, etc. Jumping jacks, burpees, pushups, pull ups, squats, lunges, skaters, mountain climbers, etc. (Google body weight exercises). If you are short on time, work these in throughout your day. You don't have to have one long workout session to benefit from exercise.
  • transportation and money should not keep you from working out! the 30 day shred vids are on youtube, as are a lot of other things. my cable provider has several free ondemand channels with workout vids that rotate every couple of weeks. NERDFITNESS.COM has a lot of great videos about using bodyweight to lift--check out the 5 minute hotel room workout, designed using only a suitcase or other slightly heavy household object, and a desk or chair.

honestly the money thing will impact the healthy eating mroe than anything, but it can be done! there are a lot of recipes here, and other online resources, for filling, nutritious, lo-cal meals. my favorite is crock pot chili, i always lose more weight the weeks i make it :) start small, dont try to do it all at once! replace chips with popcorn or baby carrots. Eat the portion size on the box for easy tracking--count out the crackers! yes! i sit at my desk and literally count out 16 animal crackers, or 27 special K chips, or 38 veggie straws.

Also helfpul for me is entering my entire days of food in the morning when i get to work. i even track the splenda in my tea, my morning vitamin, and all the water i drink. hold yourself accountable! Find some friends who are changing their lives too, and hold each other accountable!

Dont listen to this rubbish, you can eat whenever you want. Your body has no idea what time it is.

Be consistent. This is a marathon not a sprint.
