You should read up on that. Nothing I eat is going to compare to amount of iron I need so I just take iron supplements.

Red meat and eggs. But really, if it is terrible enough, you got to take a supplement. Unfortunately, I've found no food that replaces how much I get from those....and I've had several transfusions due to anemia.

I'm trying to get away from taking the iron transfusions. Every iron pill I have tried makes me SO sick! :(

My Dr. wanted to do Iron Transfusions, but she agreed to give me another 2 weeks to bring it up. I started eating 1 cup of Wheat Chex cereal every day because that has 107% of daily iron recommendation in addition to taking the Geritol Iron Tonic (liquid form found in pharmacy/medicine area) it has a very strong vitamin smell, but most people it gives a lot of energy too because it has other things besides just iron. (Bonus-I did NOT have any of the usual side effects from Iron supplements) After 2 weeks of both of these things, plus adding a little more red meat, cooking in cast iron skillet, and eating spinach, broccoli and leafy greens it finally came up to a level she was happy with. It’s not perfect but it has increased dramatically and I am no longer in the “danger zone” as my Dr. called it.
    Hope this helps.

Do you know what a normal level was? I just know my blood cell count was low..
  • Have you tried SlowFE (or similar brand)? It breaks down in the intestines rather than the stomach. Second the dry cereal. Yes, it's a processed food but it has tons of vitamins and is easy on the tummy.

I had low iron as a result of a blood test and I couldn't take the iron supplements. I raised my iron level with just a few additions to my diet. Believe it or not Cream of Wheat has one of the highest amounts of iron of any food out there. I ate this everyday and also I added pumpkin seeds to my daily food intake. My doctor was impressed by the fact that I was able to significantly raise my iron levels in 3 months.

Totally forgot about Cream of wheat-- i eat that a lot too, it's easy dinner when i don't feel like cooking and I just came from the gym.

Do you eat with your iron pill or tried to take it at night? If I take it during the day I feel sick but not right before I go to bed. I only take an iron pill every 2 days not everyday.

Maybe I should eat then take it at night. I normally take it right after a good lunch. Thanks for all the input! The slow fe makes me sick, too.

Yes, lots of cereals have it. That is my favorite source. Also, like to cook with a cast iron skillet. They say that helps. Sounds crazy, but I keep hearing it.
