Rice Cookers

I have never used one but am eating more and more brown rice.

How long do they take to cook rice?

Do all rice cookers work well for both brown and white rice?

Any other tips, hints, product suggestions?

Thanks!

I own and have used a rice cooker many times... I'll show you :)

But if anyone else out there has a tip for us we'll take it!

We have a zojirushi rice cooker and it has worked great. With an asian husband, it gets a lot of use. Everything goes with rice around here.

There's all kinds of rice cooker recipes out there, since you can cook more than just rice. If you also like steamed vegies, get one with a steam tray included. The "fuzzy logic" rice cookers are awesome, but I'm a household of one, so I just have one of the basic $15 ones. Works great. Here's my favorite easy recipe for my rice cooker.

    Easy rice cooker curry rice:
.75 cup white or brown rice
1.5 cups water (use a little more water than the bag of rice tells you)
1.5 T curry powder (more or less, depending on the strength of your powder)
    1t ginger powder
dash cayenne pepper, if you like some heat
pinch ground cardamon, if you have it
.5 to 1 cup frozen vegies (like cauliflower and broccoli mix)
    2T raisins
some precooked chicken, if you like

put it all in the cooker, mix a bit, push start, wait until the cooker turns off, eat

I wouldn't bother getting anything too fancy, even the simple ones do the job right. However, if you cook brown rice, beware that I've always doubled the water (and therefore the cook time) in order for it to cook thoroughly. I think mine takes about 30-40 minutes for brown rice vs. 15-20 for white rice.

I really never timed it, mine quits cooking and keeps it warm once it's cooked. I also use it for quinoa and wheat berries--works great.

I like mine a lot. It makes white or brown rice perfectly every time. It does seem to take longer than doing it on the stove, but other than that....total win.
