Rest days necessary?

Hey all. I'm having an internal battle with myself today and I'm hoping for some insight/encouragement into it.
How necessary are rest days? I'm always at the gym 5 days a week...no more, no less...with Wednesdays and Saturdays being my days off. However, with the 30+ inches of snow we got here, Saturday was kinda negated as an off day. If I don't hit the gym today, I will be over my calories by 281. I gotta say...it's freaking me out quite a bit. Might I add that I had a disagreement with my mother last night regarding my eating habits (long story that's pretty irrelevant at the moment), so I'm feeling guilty about missing today at the gym when I obviously need it to burn off extra calories.
I appreciate your thoughts on the matter...and thank you in advance :flowerforyou:

Listen to your body. I sometimes throw in an evening walk/jog on the treadmill, even though I do a good, tough am workout, just because I "feel" like it. I do take rest days, mostly because I just wanna have my weekends off. But, if your body feels fine,a nd you've got the itch to workout, go for it. Just don't do any strength training of any body part you did yesterday, that muscle group does need rest in between workouts.0

You can do a home workout. There are plenty of at home websites and videos online. NO EXCUSES!
Plus, it sounds like you have been doing the same routine for a while. It might help to switch it up a bit0 -
For me, rest days are a necessity so that I don't get burned out mentally or physically. But who says you gotta go to the gym to get in a little workout? Do some bodyweight exercises at home or a workout dvd. And if you do take a rest day, don't worry about 281 calories. Just cut back a few calories the next few days and you'll be back on track.0

They used to make me lazy, too but sometimes it feels good to just be able to leave work and do as I wish. I work 11 hour days Mon-Fri and most Saturdays so any "free" time I get, I try to enjoy it. Getting off at 5pm and having to be in bed by 8:30pm to start the next day doesn't give me much "down time". Everyone needs some once in awhile0
