Why Whey?

I bought the costco Whey Isolate for my husband because his doctor recommended it for his fruit smoothies in the morning.
I can't find a huge amount of information on what it is and what it is good for. Seems to go with body building. Does any one have a simple explanation as to why this is better then say eggs......
I am not heavy lifting, sorry, I know I need to begin. I hike mountains and run and do pilates. I am afraid of heavey weight because of degenerative disc disease. I will need to see a trainer about specific exercises before I start.
But back to the Whey?
Why?
Thanks.

Isn't it more protein than eggs? I think that is why people will choose whey. Depending on the shake, someone will get more protein with less calories.0

Its a Fantastic Source of Very Lean Protein, You get a lot more Protein per Carb/fat with a scoop of whey compared to say an egg or a steak.
Something like 30g instead of the mere 6 or 7 grams you get with an egg.0 -
Does anyone experience any side effects from Whey protien?0

There are basically 4 kinds of major protein supplements: Whey, Eggs, Casein, Soy. They all have different rates of absorption by our bodies. Whey is the fastest and Casein is the slowest. Eggs carry undesirable elements such as high cholesterol and Soy carries estrogen type of hormone, thus not recommended for men. As such, Whey for one is the safest for men and fastest absorbing. Whey Isolate is even better as it is the purest form of Whey without any baggage. Most people weight training, consume Whey right after their work out to have their muscles recover.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck!0 -

I think the advantage is convenience, quick, easy , doesn't need refrigeration, lasts fore er a d fills you up. But eggs are good too.0

Whey is assimilated better than soy protein. Mixes well. And the big bag from Costco is a bargain and tastes great.
But I do love my eggs. Cholesterol in the eggs has had no negative impact on my blood cholesterol. I also eat fatty meat. All of which actually lowered my cholesterol 30% in 8 months.0 -

Without getting all science-y about it, whey is a highly efficient protein source - the body is able to easily digest and make use of it. There are plenty of good whole food protein sources (eggs, meat, dairy, some plants, etc.), but supplementing with protein drinks is a way to get almost pure protein without all the extra calories, fats, carbs, etc. - useful when trying to balance your protein intake against your calories and other macronutrients.
As far as side effects, pretty much the only way you'll have them is if you have some kind of intolerance to whey, or if you have a liver/kidney disease which is aggravated by excessive protein intake. There are no side effects otherwise inherent to whey protein.0 -
He probably just recomended it to get in more protein... Its an easier way and stufff... AND ITS FREAKIN DELICIOUS!...0

I use organic hemp protein. I put in in shakes and make my own protein bars with it. It has about 15 gms of protein per serving, less than whey protein but I don't need that much protein.
And yah, I second what the other guy said about explosive farts from whey protein. My boyfriend smells like he has consumed rotten eggs after drinking a whey shake :sick:0 -
For best protein absorption you need roughly 3:1 carbs to protein.
I use a mix of hemp, brown rice, cranberry, pea, and alfalfa protein in a shake made by genuine health. Whey (especially the one from Costco) made blood vessels in my eye break from violent vomiting. Just doesn't sit well with me lol0 -

Serious SBD.
But also some real poppers. My wife almost pissed herself laughing the other night. I was doing suitcase crunches with a 30# dumbbell. First one a machine gun popper ripped:bigsmile: .0
