Chinese meltdown

So I went today with my mom and my brother to the chinese buffet. Before you jump on my case about going to a buffet...I always order off the menu. Well I am use to the people looking at me like I'm crazy or going to eat off of someone's plate. Today was the all time worst! The hostess asked us how many and this is when I told her, "Two buffets and one menu." She looked at me like they all do and confirmed, "Two buffet and you are ordering off the menu?" I replied, "Yes ma'am. I don't need the buffet, it's too much food." To which she replied, "Oh you have no self control?" Umm excuse me! I didn't say anything but I was thinking in my head 'YES I do have self control that is why I am not paying 6.99 for one plate of food and just ordering off the menu! What I get is 4.55! why would I pay 1.50 more for the same plate!' I was hot to say the least. To make matters worse when they brought the bill it looked like this:
1 Mixed Vegetable : 5.95
Tax : 0.42
Discount :-1.00
Total : 5.35
Umm...your math is wrong. 4.55 plus tax (which is 7% in the state of GA) comes to 4.87 all day long. So after we were all done I went to check out and brought this to the cashiers attention. The SAME woman came over and tried to argue with me over the price and stormed off when she realized I was right. I politely told the man behind the counter that I normally wouldn't mention this kind of thing but since she was rude I couldn't help but say something. He then said, "I'm sure your math is right and I'm sorry about her rudeness." I thanked him and said, "I really do appreciate you guys offering the menu items because I am trying to be healthier and lose weight. It helps to be able to chose one option and not go out of control. But when someone makes a comment about your self control or weight it can really bring you down. I would never try to hinder her in her personal struggle, and she shouldn't do the same to someone else." The man smiled, and I left.
Have you ever had an experience like this? or am I the only one?

You handled this perfectly, IMO. Hopefully the man at the register is either a manager or speaks to the manager. The waitress probably didn't want to be bothered to go back to the kitchen to pick up your lunch.
When she said "Oh you have no self control?" I would have said "Yes, I do, which is why I'm ordering off the menu".0 -
I applaud you! My husband LOVES to go to the Chinese buffet restaurants, and he loads on up. I used to do the same, but I am NOT doing that any more. I am proud of you, and you handled this perfectly! I have to say I have gotten to know the Chinese waitresses over the years, and sometimes the cultural differences don't translate well. What is rude or inappropriate to us isn't always rude or inappropriate to them. She really may not have realized how offensive she was, but I am sure the manager will talk to her after your incident.0

You are not the only one! I've had this problem at buffets too. My husband and I sometimes get some flack when we share an entree at other restaurants, but I refuse to order an enormous meal that will go to waste, and not everything is good the next day so I may not wish to take the remainder home. I'm not quite old enough to be considered a senior, but there are some restaurants that will allow me to order off of the senior or kids menu when I tell them my diet concerns. You don't know if you don't try. Hang tough girl!0
