I am looking into starting the 17 Day Diet. It is a pretty low carb diet (about 78 carbs a day). I did some research and it says that you can have "starvation ketones". It this bad for a diabetic?

Have you ever done a lower carb diet?

Thank you in advance for any feedback.

78 carbs is definitely doable--I do low carb a lot and first things first, detach yourself from the following items

    1-pasta
    2-sugar
    3-potatoes
    4-bread
There are other items such as grits(baad), corn, peas parsnips and sweet potatoes and a few other veggies but I allow myself to eat sweet potatoes & peas. They are only about 30-40 carbs each and eating a 1/2 sweet potato is even better.
Watch out for carbs in beans, peanuts etc--not always really bad but make sure to check. Those things are usually find in small amounts.
I do sometimes eat bread. I get Nature's Own Double Fiber which has 8 net carbs per slice. Eating 2 slices per day isn't bad. There are also low carb wraps. I don't get those often but they are nice to have sometimes.

If you cut most of that out, you will have no problem eating low carb even if you want to have a bit of fruit or something. I think fruit is healthy, but be careful with fruit juices which are high in sugar. If you love fruit juice(I do) dilute it to 33% by using 2/3 c water to 1/3 c juice. 78 Carbs isn't too restrictive =] Just don't eat out.

I've been Type I since I was 18. I've never done a low carb diet but I think there may be some merit to a regular diet (not just one that lasts 17 days) that is low in carbs. Less carbs=Less Insulin. Here is an interesting article that I found:

I'd like to know how it goes for you.

As a type 1 be prepared to drop your insulin on that kind of diet. If you go cold turkey and are eating upwards of 200 carbs a day now you may find yourself chugging sugar for the lows as your body is not used to that kind of diet. As we have slowly changed my husbands diet over the past 2 years (and added a lot more exercize) we have literally cut his long term insulin in half and short term insulin (ie: meal shots) ratio's have also had to change with the heatlhier foods. (from 66 units of lantus/day down to 28 on a high intensity exersize day)

You'll have to be careful is my best suggestion, I think in the long term if you can adjust, it could possibly be a good thing for you. However, being that my husband is burning over 500 cal/day and at least 2 days a week over 1000 calories I don't think I could ever get him down that low considering we eat our exercize calories and you need to keep some sort of ratio in the carbs.

Note: I am not type 1, just deal with the hourly demands of my wonderful type 1 hubby (z.e.r.o. insulin production of his own).
