What supplements should I be taking?

In my past attempts (some successful, some not) to drop some weight I have used some supplements. In the beginning I used MuscleMilk, and loved the taste, but I was packing on the weight. I realize that it is geared more towards the lifters. Then I took Wheybolic Extreme Whey Protein from GNC. Liked it, can used it, but again, despite my workouts, and watching what I'm eating, I was putting on weight, and it didn't seem to be helping me loose any inches. The last thing I tried was the Lean Shake 25 from GNC. Again nothing.
I feel kind of stupid asking this question, because I know the products I took were designed to bulk you up, but I didn't "notice" any difference. I want to bulk up, but I also want to drop some lbs and inches. What kind of suggestions do you have? Was I using them wrong, should I only be drinking a shake after a workout?
Help...and thanks in advance

Like I mentioned, I feel kind of dumb asking, and your response was kind of eye opening. Never really thought of it like that. I know the importance for me is on loosing weight, but i want to tone up as well. I don't want to be all ripped, but some definition would be nice...LOL0

My trainer has me on Humapro, and I love it. It is basically all of the component amino acids of protein without the waste (because apparently even chicken breast is something like 75% waste), and it has NO calories. You use a much smaller scoop than something like whey, and it shakes up in water pretty easy. I really like it so far. I love the pineapple and don't like the orange!!!0

You shouldn't need any supplements at all. Eat a well balanced diet and you should be fine0
