Weights for a complete beginer

Hi everyone

Well I am wanting to tone up as well as loose some weight and have heard that weights is the way forward but have no idea where to start.

I am not a member of a gym and don't really have time to go either with other activities I do such as swimming, Horse riding and pilates I am willing to give up the swimming and pilates if im gonna get more results from joining the gym and doing weights instead. I am currently doing Jillian Micheals 30 day shred and if im honest just doing that is the first time ive ever really done anything with weights and even then they are only 3kg hand weight (please don't laugh im only little)

well if anyone would like to take pitty on me and give me a little advice I would be very grateful

I'm also a beginner. I'm halfway through stage 1 of New Rules of Lifting for Women. It's super awesome and I've seen amazing results so far so I really recommend that you stop expecting the results you want out of lifting 3 lb weights and go lift something heavier. If you look at the many, many before and after pictures of women who lift, I can almost guarantee you that those women didn't get those bodies by lifting 3 lb dumbbells a thousand times.

I learnt how to lift weights buy doing a few sessions with a trainer (just to get the basics) and then I bought the Body for Life book which had photos of how to lift weights. The book was an awesome platform to begin from.

New Rules of Lifting for Women is a great starting place. It's an inexpensive book, or I bet you could find it at your library. Read the book, pick a starting number and see how you do. I started deadlifts at 45 pounds, squats I could only do bodyweight, same with lunges and step ups I used 5 pound dumbells. Work on form over increased weights - check out Youtube for help with that. Once you have your form solid, work on increasing weights. By the time I finished the 1st stage (there are 7 total), I could deadlift 110, squat 85, lunges 25 # dbs.

    Good luck!

I'm also a complete beginner, but have been following posts to get more info. I workout at home and currently only have dumbells. I used youtube to find a full body dumbell workout. It was fifty minutes long. It was a Gabriel Davidson video. He was easy to follow along with and made sure to demonstrate and show form for each exercise. He rests between sets, so I did active rest by jogging in place. I also looked up videos to demonstrate dumbell deadlifts and one arm alternating clean and presses and did those. Hope that helps:flowerforyou:

I would tend to buy the ones where you can change the weight. As you get further into your routine you will get stronger and will lift heavier. You will probably get the most benefit out of weights you can increase steadily.

For doing squats if you dont have a barbell you can use dumbells but Im sure the books will explain that for you.

Yes you're going to want to invest in weight sets. Check CraigsList and Ebay, watch for sales at the sporting good stores, and for small increases look into wrist weights 1 and 2.5 plates. Home sets have 10 pound bars usually whereas at the gym the olympic bar is 45. You add that into the total weight you lift. The bars on my home dumbells are 2.5 I think and I have plates that start at 1lb on up to 25. If you feel like you aren't getting the form, I suggest a day pass at your local gym and a training session. It makes all the difference in the world.
