Go to local bike shops and test ride several different bikes. Read up on different levels of components. The most common brands of drive train components for higher end road bikes are Shimano, Campagnolo and SRAM. Each had different levels of components. There are lots of different brands of fine bikes sold in the US that are suitable for your use. For the most part, they manufacture the frame and possibly some of the components, but most of the drive train components come from one of the big 3.
Fit will be the most important issue. find out what type of fitting you will get with the purchase. Are they willing to swap out components if necessary?

Good bikes: Ones from a bike store.
