Hey MFP! Is nitrate free meats like ham, turkey, lox and chicken sausage sold at regular grocery stores like Kroger and Publix or do I need to go to an expensive whole foods store? Thanks!

I got some Coleman bacon the other day at Kroger. It cooks differently...tends to burn before the rest is cooked it still tastes the same though!0

I buy mine at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. On a rare occasion I can find something at my supermarket, but it happens so sporadically that I just go to WH of TJ for bacon and meats now and save myself the hassle.0

if you have a safeway or fresh and easy near you they sell nitrate free meats, as well trader joes, sprouts etc. Kroger is Fry's out here and they have an entire section of the store devoted to organic, nitrate free etc so your kroger probably does too.
Oh, and depending on what you are looking for I find that roasting your own meat of choice is a great option too.0 -
Go to www.localharvest.com and find a farm near you. In my area, we have farms with meat memberships (called CSAs) that allow you to get a variety of naturally raised (no nitrates, hormones, etc...) And if you ever have questions the farmers know more about what they raise than any grocery store. My meat farm makes sausage, lunch meat, ring bologna, the best bacon on earth and all the traditional cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken and turkey.0

Thanks folks! My Kroger has a pretty decent sized natural section so I'll check them out first then try the other suggestions.
Stylistchick-I got this off Google:
Sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and its close relative sodium nitrite (NaNO2) are preservatives that you find in lots of processed meats. Stuff like salami, hot dogs, pepperoni, bologna, ham, bacon and SPAM all normally contain sodium nitrate as one of the ingredients. Fresh meats generally do not contain any added chemicals.0 -

don't forget to mention that these chemicals have been linked to cancer!0 -
You can get Hormel Natural Choice lunch meats at Wal-mart and Jewel. They are only a few bucks at Wal-mart.They are with all the other packaged lunch meats. Jewel carries Hormel Natural Choice bacon that is awesome!! I usually wait till it goes on sale bogo and stock up and freeze it. Its usually around 6 dollars a package but it's on sale alot. Jewel also sells Vienna Beef Natural hot dogs. They are right next to the regular Vienna Beef dogs. Not every Jewel though.0

Trader Joes has some excellent lunch meat that is nitrate free...I wish I could remember the brand...I will look at WalMart today when I go and see what I can find there, if any, and report back. I know for a fact that they don't carry organic meat but maybe something in lunch meats...highly doubt it though.0 -

I have found alot of natural, nitrate free meats at Costco. I've gotten Jones brand brown & serve style sausages, Coleman hot dogs and bacon, and Aidells and Amylou's chicken sausages.0
