Seaweed, sodium, and confusion

I love seaweed salad. I grab it prepared at the supermarket or fish store, sushi restaurants, wherever. Miso soup. And its been recommended to me that i throw some dried seaweed into my green smoothies. Ive read how healthy it is over and over. Its logical enough, that the stuff grows in saltwater and is ridiculously high in sodium.

Ive been trying very hard to keep an eye of my sodium intake and overall, have been doing a *decent* job keeping it under 2000 (sometimes up to 2500, sometimes under 1000). But days that i eat seaweed, i blow those numbers out. Is this sodium in some way "healthier" because it's naturally occurring and not added salt? but then again, isnt the salt that is added to anything natural all on its own? Should i worry less about this sodium (the way i worry less about the sugar i get from fruit), or is it just that the other health benefits of seaweed make it worth eating despite the high sodium? Input is greatly appreciated!

Just like everything, moderation is the key. If it is something youre concerned about, limit the time you have seaweed to a few days a week.

And remember to drink lots and lots and lots of water!
  • thanks...i wouldnt say that i eat it any more than than that, if even that. Just that today i did, and noticed my sodium over 3600! Im already drowning, i drink around 18-22+ cups per day ;-) ...hopefully that helps.
