for those who have lost 100+ pounds... suggestions please

My husband and I re-dedicated ourselves to get back in shape this year. I am very active on the site, but DH is not. He is getting frustrated with the process but would never share on here... so I would like to share for him.

He is 36, 277 pounds. He is obese. He set up his goals by using the guided section on MFP & it came up with 1700 cals a day (plus eating back any workout cals) Well, he's never followed it, only netting 500-900 cals a day. He works out quite a bit 5 days a week, even doulbe workouts some days. I tell him he's not eating enough. However, he has a hard time grasping the concept. As he puts it..." how can I lose weight if I'm forcing food down my throat to get to my 3000 cals a day after workouts? That's how I got fat to begin with."

I used the TDEE - 20% method & confirmed 3000 cals is his goal.

How can he eat 3000 cals of healthy choices? He managed to get there yesterday... but it was most certainly not healthy. I use the TDEE formula as well, but only eat 1700 cals & still find myself struggling to eat that much most days. I couldn't imagine eating 3000 cals a day.

Maybe he doesn't need to workout quite as much? Not sure that suggestion would fly anyways. He loves watching Biggest Loser & feels he needs to push it like they do. He also disbelieves the contestants are eating that much as well. Obviously there is a difference between the show & him doing this at home... but he feels since he is so obese - body fat over 45% - that he should lose faster at first.

I just don't know how to help him

If he doesn't want to eat more, he'll need to eat less. Biggest Loser is completely unrealistic, and should not be used as a guideline (if it motivates, great, but it's definitely not the healthy way to approach weight loss). That said, there are a fair number of ways to increase calories that are healthy: peanut butter, avocados, butter, olive oil, nuts, etc. But, a lot of people also feel that you shouldn't deprive yourself. If you have calories left and you ate well all day, go ahead and have a bowl of ice cream or some cookies.

Also, with as much as he has to lose, he can handle TDEE-30%.
