It might be better to switch over to a clean eating diet gradually so your body will have a chance to get used to it.

I'm glad I saved this post, because it's getting a lot of usage lately:

Your body has a set of requirements. It needs water, the proper amount of electrolytes, vitamins and minerals, and a level of nutrient that allows it to break down, rebuild, and repair itself. Getting this balance right means being very aware of your body.

It is very important that you eat the right amount of food for your body to maintain itself.

I don't believe in getting my needed nutrients from pills, so this may seem like a radical idea to some: try getting your nutrition from your food. And not just any food either; you want to look for the best stuff, because this is your body you're caring for, and who wouldn't want the best for their body?

Eat more vegetables and fruit. Look for organic brands, or shop from farmers markets. The fresher the better. If you have the time, try growing your own. The quality of home grown vegetables is very noticeable, in flavor and nutrient content.

Buy grass-fed/pasture raised meats, wild caught fish, and free range chicken/eggs. Do not be afraid to eat the fat, and don't leave out the egg yolks: they have the most basic nutrients your body needs. Avoid farmed fish, for they are fed many antibiotics and colorants. Avoid barn-laid, cage-free, and cage eggs, and do not eat grain fed meat or factory raised meat. If feasible, try to locate a farmer or a co-op that can provide you these things.

Buy grass-fed butter, whole, UN-homogenized milk (or raw if you can get it), use clean animal fats (pork lard, duck fat, beef or lamb tallow) or cold-pressed coconut oil for cooking, and extra virgin olive oil for cold dishes. Do not use hydrogenated oils, margarine, blended butters, vegetable oil, or anything with trans fats. Do not use milk powders, or drink ultra-pasteurized or UHT milks (they are over cooked, with damaged proteins and fats, and are from much lower quality milk overall). Do not drink skim milk: there is hardly anything useful left in it for you, and they use titanium dioxide to make it white (without the pigment, the skim milk would be bluish in color).

Enjoy nuts, seeds, avocados, naturally fermented foods (such as sauerkraut, beet kvass, kimchi, etc) to encourage good gut bacteria. Use home made yogurt and kefir. Use raw honey and pure maple syrup.

Try to avoid things with ingredients lists. Avoid refined sugar and flours, and anything that says "enriched", "fortified", "with _____ added", anything insisting it's "healthy", "low fat", "no fat", "low carb", "low sugar", "sugar-free", "lean" or "skinny". Avoid the majority of wheat, avoid soy at all costs, avoid corn (aside, perhaps, from a bit of fresh, organic sweet corn) and all of it's derivatives. (Cutting out processed foods, breads, etc will help knock a lot of these out of the game.) Avoid soda pop and most juices.

Remove all GMOs from your diet. They raise the risk of cancer and food allergies, are soaked with pesticides and herbicides, they destroy the environment, plant and animal life, and are run by morally corrupt companies who have their fingers in many pies.

Get plenty of sunshine. If you live in a place with a short winter day (as I do) you may use fermented cod liver oil to supplement yourself until summer rolls around. You need the Vitamin D. (If you want to know what your Vit D levels look like, they can run a blood test for it.)

Drink plenty of water. It's what allows your body to function at it's best. It helps with the transfer of nutrients, it keeps your blood flowing, and assist in the removal of toxins from your tissues. Don't drink too much on hot days, though, as that may dilute your electrolyte balance. If drinking a lot on hot days, have something with a little sea salt added, like broth, or look up a recipe for a natural electrolyte drink.

Listen to your body. Are you hungry? Feed it a meal, or a snack. Eat several small meals through the day and keep whole, healthy foods on hand. Cook more meals from scratch. Do you wake up feeling hungry in the middle of the night? You might be thirsty. Keep a glass of water by the bed. Do you feel tired or restless or unsettled during the day? Go for a walk/run to wake your body up and get its cells and fluids moving, and to help aid digestion and sleep. Get at least 6 or 7 hours of sleep at night. Find a hobby that you like doing. Please your mind with reading or craft projects, or gardening.

I like to call this common sense living. If you can do these things, you're well on your way to good health, both physical and mental.

Remember: You are beautiful and so is your body. It doesn't matter what others think. Your body is a finely tuned machine, and it knows exactly what it needs, so do your best to give it the best.

I started eating clean about a month in a half ago. I only get really bad stomach pains about an hour after running. On my DVD workout days I have no problems.

Sorry to hear you're having a problem. It might be something besides the food that's giving you stomach aches. Get it checked out by your doctor. The only thing I can think of is that your fiber content is drastically higher, and your body needs time to adjust, or you're allergic to something in the almond milk or something new you're eating. Last year, after I added savi seeds to my diet, I had gall bladder problems.
Good luck to you and congratulations on your weight loss and clean eating!

If you are eating a lot of raw food your body may be adjusting. I would suggest following advice like in Natalia Rose book "raw food life force energy" She recommends an ease into things. You are probably eating more fibre than you are used to. Sometimes also changing from one diet to anothe creates an imbalance. For example some people I know who go gluten free start relying heavily on nuts which should be eaten in moderation. same as people who go into raw food only lifestyle.

I just started reading at book by Matt Stone called "diet recovery 2" I'm really enjoying it.

If you want add me as a friend. I try to eat green, incorporate juicing and smoothies and am mostly gluten free. I do not replace gluten with gluten free products. I also do not consume soy products. I try to eat things with short ingredient lists but I am not religious in my eating habits. If I go to a movie or a carnival I eat the things my kids eat like hot dogs and movie popcorn.

I only eat organic when it comes from my own garden in the summer. Also some of the fruits where I include the peel in my juice are organic BUT I choose locally grown over organic.

My diary is open so feel free to check it out. Also clean eating friends are always welcome just include a message in your request.

I get my bloodwork done every 3 months and everything was looking ok last check... I have noticed the tummy aches are usually after I work out. At first I thought I was not getting enough calories before my workout so I started eating more before I worked out, that didn't seem to help much though. I am also getting them before bed at night.

The worst part about feeling yucky is that I don't keep much in the house that fits the BRAT diet.

How is your fiber intake? If you increased it drastically, it can cause distress.

If it persists, you really should see your doctor.

you could be allergic or intolerant to something that you've started eating recently. Just because a food is clean, doesn't mean no-one's allergic or intolerant to it.

It could just be your system adjusting. Probiotics may help, i.e. "friendly bacteria" as these can help break down some foods. many dairy products e.g. yoghurt contain them, and there are dairy free foods that contain them as well.

Could it be the almond milk? I have issues with most diary and I had heard that almond milk is easier on the stomach, for me, it didn't matter. I'd still get the same pains I got while drinking regular milk

When I drank more water and ate healthier (though I /was/ still eating junk) I got horrible backaches. I slowed it down for a while and went back to my regular diet, just more calorie conscious and now I'm eating healthier again and no back aches! :D

It's probably your body adjusting to the new food.

I don't eat much chocolate anymore and sometimes if I do I get stomach cramps.

Or maybe wait longer between eating and working out. I know some people have said they get sick if they work out too soon after they eat.

I don't think it is the almond milk cause I have been drinking almond milk smoothies for months and had no issues.
  • I don' t have time right now to read the responses. If no one has suggested it get yourself some digestive enzymes and probiotics. When I started working with trainer Nadine Dumas this was her first recommendation. It made a huge difference!

    Is this a supplement?
  • Yes, you can get both at any pharmacy. When you change your body's fuel so much it's like your car, it needs to clean itself out of the toxins etc. Using a digestive enzyme and probiotic will help regulate your digestive system.

Yes increase in fibre will do this. Fibre is harder to digest and keeps you feeling full longer. I eat a lot of fibre but sometimes if I I eat 2 cups of raw vegetables like broccoli at meal time I get some stomach pain. Mostly I think my body is used to it. Also when I started juicing I noticed an amazing rush like coffee but also some stomach pain occasionally. Beets are especially difficult for me to digest. I still can only juice 1/4 of a beet. I avoid them because of this.

This sounds like gas. If I eat pasta I get this and sometimes it lasts all night. It can be incredibly painful. Gas can cause some pretty atrocious cramping. Try increasing your fluid intake. Probiotics and enzymes sound like a great idea that will help the bacteria in your intestines cope with your increased fibre intake. I guarantee your body will adjust.

What kind of 'pain' are you referring to? up around the stomache or lower in the digestive tract?

My fibre increased drasticly when I started out and I used to get horrible pains associated with constipation. When I started increasing my water and probiotic foods, they slowly subsided.

    Best of luck!

Definitely try the probiotics. I recently refocused my diet on eating super clean and was getting terrible gas after every meal. After only a couple of days of taking one pill with each meal, I was back to normal. The pharmacist recommended staying on them for 2-3 weeks and then easing off. By that time, according to him, my good bacteria was to be back up to appropriate levels.

The pharmacy will sell them under brand name and generic labels. My pharmacist told me that there really is no difference. Just go with whatever is cost effective. In any event, adding this to your diet cannot hurt. If you already have enough good bacteria, it won't make a difference. But if your body is having trouble digesting all of the fibrous good stuff you're eating, then it can only help.

Good luck, and good job on sticking with your clean eating diet. In time, you won't know how you ever ate all of the other stuff all the time!

Common problem with me too. Try cooking your vegetables longer. High fiber foods create a lot of gas. Try palpating your stomachs to get the gas moving, drink a healthy carbonated beverage to encourage burping or flatulance. I've found that Tums and Beano also help.
