Exercise calories question from a noob

Hi all, I just started on MFP about 6 weeks ago and today was my first workout after starting - I did 20 minutes on the elliptical, did the manual setting starting at resistance level 1 and worked up to 3. Not a strenuous workout (first day!) but the machine said I took 2000 steps & burned 254 calories. MFP says I burned 266 calories.

These both sound really high? Yeah I was beat because I haven't worked out in ages, but it seems like a lot of calories! Do you all generally just use these estimates or adjust them, look on another site for more reliable info, or...? And, am I really supposed to eat all those calories back? Thanks for the input!

The info on the machine is usually pretty accurate. And depending on your weight, that does not seem that high at all :) I burn around 500 calories per hour on the elliptical, and I'm not particularly heavy.

To answer your second question, you don't have to eat back the calories, but most people do. The way that MFP is set up is that you get to eat them back. Hope that helped! :)
