Ok so I get the principles of this (I think!) so want to double check that I am correct in the following:

My BMR is calculated at 1487
My TDEE = 2045

So realistically I should be netting around 1600 to lose weight?

It is my understanding that as long as you used your current activity level to calculate your TDEE-20% (or whatever % you used), that you eat around 1600, but that is not net.. Because TDEE accounts for your activity level you do not subtract exercise cals.

Unless you set your activity level to sedentary with the intention of logging your exercise as you go. In which case you should eat those calories back. Or a proportion of them - depending on how you measure them, whether you're relying on MFP estimates or using a HRM etc.

As the others have said, 1600 total, not net, to lose about a pound a week. If you can afford to lose slower, particularly if you are close to goal, you can eat a little more.

I am the same, I decided started using TDEE-20% yesterday, as I am concerned that MFP overestimates calorie burn from exercise. I still log my exercise to keep track of how much activity I am doing, but do not eat back exercise calories, but my TDEE-20% is 1719 cals per day, whcih keep me satisfied. You can adjust your goals in MFP if you prefer.

I found 1600 - 1800 was the magic number for my weightloss! 5'5...went from 180 to 124 and I've maintained between 124 and 134 for three whole years.
