I feel orthorexia is the disorder after one tries to recover from anorexia and bulimia. I say this out of experience. It seems as someone with an ED tries to recover they over compensate and just fall into another extreme. It is the nature of the disease.
I think that formerly, they all could have been lumped under "OCD" (obsessive-compulsive disorder). While it is true that OCD tends to jump from one obsession/compulsion to another, the underlying "disorder" is one of excessive timidity and a lack of confidence. Our culture does not protect children very well and at the same time, through the mass media, pushes children to fearfulness. Compulsive behavior is just the outworking of the child's desire to control his/her environment. Part of the treatment is building confidence through "doing hard things". Children quite logically see themselves as weak and the antidote to that is building strength and self-reliance in them as they mature.0
