Foods to avoid?

I'm looking for some ideas of foods that I should and should not be eating.
I'm keeping track of my calories but are there certain foods I need to cut out of my diet that will keep me
from losing weight?

Nope. Are there things that are better for you and have fewer calories absolutely, but I personally don't ban anything from my life. I still eat pizza, chocolate, soda, pasta, cheese etc but it's in smaller quantities and on a far less regular basis. I'm not on a diet, I've made a lifestyle change and my life includes anything I want. If you stay within range of your calorie goals then you're fine and should lose weight. If you eat higher calorie foods then you'll have to eat less. I personally want to eat as much as possible so I try to eat healthier most of the time.0

What she said. Of course, aim to eat MOSTLY nutritious, fresh, whole foods, but don't deny yourself the other stuff. In my experience you go nuts over avoiding "forbidden" foods and end up wanting them MORE and in ridiculous quantities; this can be prevented if you just watch the portion sizes and work it into your calories for the day.0 -
I gave up alcohol and chicken wings. The only reason is that I cannot have 3 chicken wings and be full. What a waste..
Alcohol makes me want to eat chicken wings... :grumble:0 -

I have ditched alcohol, sugar, and anything with white flour. Up'd my protein intake and vegetables and have dropped 40+ lbs in 4 months. Good luck!0

Not really foods to cut if you don't want to cut them you just need to work them into your daily calorie budget.
I haven't given up pizza, pasta, cake or ice cream. I find ways to keep it in even if it means that I have to work hard for a few days just to make up for how much I had lol.
There are definitely healthier choices and healthier versions to a lot of food so it's worth getting creative to find a way to keep on budget while not giving up what you love.0 -
Don't eat foods you don't like...fit what you do like into your calorie and macro targets. Just make sure you have some nutrient dense foods so you also get your micronutrients.
ETA: the only reason you should avoid foods is due to medical conditions or if they are trigger food.0 -
nope, you may eat any food.0

I haven't cut anything out of my diet. Had chicken wings and a high ABV beer for lunch this past week. A lot of folks will argue, don't eat this or that because it may have worked for them.
I'm arguing eating whatever you crave in moderation, unless you plan on giving it up forever.
..but you can do whatever you want.0 -

I know there are already people contradicting this philosophy, but realistically, when you start to change your diet for the better there WILL be foods that you avoid for long periods of time, even if you "never say never". The key is to think less about the foods you're avoiding and more about enjoying the new, healthier foods you're trying. When I drive by a McDonald's or an Arby's, I COULD go through the drive-through and get a reasonable meal off the dollar menu (though it'd be processed crap loaded with sodium), however, I choose to avoid it and come home to prepare something that will still satisfy me without making me feel guilty afterwards.
If you drink a lot of soda or other caffeinated drinks, try to wean yourself off of it. Water is really the only drink you need, and except for my 1 cup of coffee in the morning (I would be a zombie without it) and a glass of milk or juice here and there, it's all I drink. If you love foods that are really high in sugar, fat or salt, try to find foods resembling the same texture or flavor that are healthier to substitute-- carrots for chips, fruit instead of cookies, grilled instead of fried. Even if you only make 2 "swaps" per day, that's still a step in the right direction. And obviously, it's still fine to indulge yourself and eat whatever you like, but I am a firm advocate that not all foods are created equal. Eventually I want to have a diet that's far healthier than the one I have now (which is still an improvement from where I was two months ago). Best of luck to you on your journey!0 -
For your long term health, I'd say avoid avoidance. I've had a couple of mfp friends who were 'good' throughout their 'diet' and then cracked completely when they hit maintenance. If you have 'good' and 'bad' food you are setting yourself up for all kinds of difficulties with coping with the real world. I'm sure it works for some, but I'm certainly not one of them!0

Do not cut anything out unless you have a medical reason to do so reason to do so. There is no need to cut anything out of your diet. Reduce your portions, eat the item less often, or find a healthier, lower calorie way to prepare your favourite foods. If there is a certain food that you cannot control yourself around buy smaller portions of it or don't buy it at all.0

nope, eat whatever you want as long as it's within your cals, youre not allergic or have any kinds of adverse reactions.
when you "avoid" or "cut out" foods, you'll end up craving, binging and hating yourself (ok, maybe that's just me but whatever).
If you give yourself permission to eat whatever you want, you'll have better control in the long run0 -
All things in moderation. Enjoy your pizza and beers!0

I recently started avoiding anything made with wheat and added sugars. I am focusing more on eating raw fruits and vegetables whenever possible and I have had great success with this.0

Stop eating crap food: fried foods, fast food, lots of sugar --donuts, candy pop etc. ....and start focusing on healthy food. The quicker you can get on a diet such as... paleo or the dash diet --the better off you will be in the long run. When you do eat crap food (pizza, donuts etc) make sure it's only once a month. We are all human and fall. But seriously.... just try to avoid the crap as much as possible. I gave away my secret stash of girl scout cookies today to my office. Eating those daily is only going to hinder my results.0

BASIC RULES TO FOLLOW (I wrote this for a friend who asked me to tell her what I have done to see results. I find it very easy to do, and I feel fantastic, but everyone is different.)
1) Drink LOTS of water. This is important. Drink at least 8 cups of water a day.
2) No eating out! No exceptions. Avoid temptation. It will make you stronger, and so so so much healthier.
3) No added sugar. Added sugar does not include natural sugar that is in fruit or dairy, that sugar is okay. Added sugar is everything else, such as white sugar, brown sugar, high fructose corn syrup, etc.
4) No added fat. This includes butter and oil. If you MUST use oil, use olive oil, and in small amounts.
5) Limit your carbs and cheese, this doesn't mean you have to not eat them all together, but limit them to a small amount.
6) Limit processed foods. This includes cereal, Smart One's frozen dinners, Uncle Ben's Rice... things like that. When grocery shopping, look at the ingredients. If you can't pronounce a lot of them, then don't buy it.
7) Eat often. Eat 5-6 small meals a day, instead of the standard 3. This will keep your metabolism going throughout the day, and you will have less hunger pains, if you're eating every few hours. You may feel like you are eating more than normal, but it will be smaller amounts, and better for you food.
8) Stick to your calorie allowance! You have got to enter your stuff into MyFitnessPal. If you don't do this, you do not know what you are eating. Also, do not eat after 7:00, or at least 4 hours before you go to bed. It is okay to go to bed hungry.
9) Measure your food. If you eat chicken, weigh it on a scale, or measure it in a measuring cup. Same with veggies, and liquids. If you guess, you will probably be wrong unless you've measured long enough to be able to accurately "guess". You need to measure your condiments too, ketchup, oil, mayonnaise (although you shouldn't be eating much mayonnaise anyways) You can get a food scale at the store for about $10. It is worth the cost, for sure.
10) Ask for help.
GOOD LUCK with your journey, everyone's is different!0 -

Oh I love wings. I just have to keep telling myself that they are 100 cal EACH.0 -
Only things I cut out was soda cause I need to drink more water and I wont do that with cokes around, and
chocolate. One piece will turn in to hundreds of pieces.(: but thanks for the suggestions and advice!0
