Deli meat?

I was wondering is it better to buy fresh cut deli meat or prepackaged? Like is there less crap in fresh sliced?

I don't buy it all the time and I rather get the ones that have less junk in it.

I buy packaged, primarily because I'm specifically looking for ones that contain no nitrates. The only place I ever found that had deli meat that was fresh cut and didn't have nitrates was Wegmans.

I worked in a deli for a couple years. I'm very picky about my deli meats. I can't think of a single item there that isn't "processed" in some way and never found them to have less "junk" than what was available in the pre-sliced section. Honestly, I stay away from them for the most part. Most of the ones in the deli case are easy to look up, but it's just more work for you. The bonus to the deli counter ones is you can get whatever quantity or thickness you prefer for your slices.

I recommend you buy the ones that are already sliced and packaged, so you can see the ingredients easily to compare. What you might consider an acceptable ingredient, someone else might not.

Personally, I make my own sandwich spreads from tuna, chicken breasts, egg or pinto beans so I know what's going into them.

I don't think there us typically any difference. The frest sliced are not any fresher or less processed, they are just not sliced before packaging. I just roast my own meats now to slice for sandwiches.
