The only time poor people spending money on smokes and booze bothers me is when they ***** about how ****ty their life is.
Yes, because all they have to do to lift themselves out of poverty is quit spending 100 a month on smokes. They'll be rolling in their newfound health insurance and full auto coverage in no time. /sarcasm

Nooooo! The thread can't get all serious yet, I wanna have some fun dammit.0

No one one here is poor. You are using a computer and worried about decreasing your food intake. Real poor people are starving.
This. I am normally completely against the 'firstworldproblems' schtick, but most people have truly lost sight of what poverty really is.
Understandably, but does that mean that the poor here in America, who struggle to feed their children, are any less deserving of compassion and help simply because there is (could they afford it) plentiful food around them? A problem is a problem, no matter who is experiencing it. To say otherwise is to set up (what's called in some circles) the "Oppression Olympics", in which it becomes a round-robin game of nothing getting done because someone else always has it worse.
Their problem is not mine. The fact that it is made to be mine via social programs is why I get pissed about it. If I could get up at 3 a.m. every day to kill myself shoveling 300 degree asphalt for 16 hours per day for seven years, they have no excuse. "But there's no work". Bull****. We have laborers come and go out of our door like it's revolving. Why? Because it's hard work, and people seem to be allergic to that **** these days.0 -

Ah yes. The "I pull myself up with my bootstraps, they can too!" You are aware that the majority of the poor work full time, correct? And about a quarter of poor people who don't work are under the age of 14 and not legally able to work?
There's work. But it's damn hard to support a family on 7.25 an hour. There's no work that PAYS WORTH A DAMN, is the problem. (At least if you're unskilled and uneducated.)0 -

Come on in, we can take it back!!0 -
I don't know so much Tyler... There's a whole lotta hating going on here!0

Just gonna put this out there: I haven't found a paving company in recent years yet that pays their bottom of the rung laborers less than $10 per hour to start. Also, they should have thought of the consequences before procreating. Again, their bad decisions should not in any way weigh upon my obligations. I haven't (and won't) have children, because I know it is financially unfeasible to do so, even at what I make, which is well above the American average. It comes down to personal responsibility, and not making one person's problem everyone's problem. That crap only work on the small scale, like communes, where everyone knows each other. The hell do I care if some douche can't afford to feed his five kids because he made a bunch of crap decisions in his life?0 -
I guess i have to wait till October to qualify for this thread
The mood has become too serious for me to care anyway.0 -
Let me put it this way:
The Economic Policy Institute, in 2004, found that the US spends least amount of social welfare and has the highest child poverty rate when compared to other first world, industrialized countries. (Which is about 17 other countries)
2010: UN Human Development Reports ranked the US worst in 17 other comparable countries for the Human Poverty Index.
The US Guidelines for poverty was established in 1960's when families spent 1/3 of income on food - now they spend 1/7 of income on food, as housing, child care, health care, and utility costs have soared.
2012: 2009: 10.7 million people worked, 2.6 million of them held full time jobs. 5.6% of that number is comprised of children too young to work.
Full time minimum wage worker earns 81% below poverty level for family of 3. In 1968 that level was 17%.
Working harder will not solve this.0 -
The hell do I care if some douche can't afford to feed his five kids because he made a bunch of crap decisions in his life?
.......but you just talked about how there were poor people starving in India? Also.......you don't care about starving children?
There may be nothing more I can argue about with you. I thought the common denominator, no matter which side you're on, would be "Hey starving kids is BAD!"0 -

1. It spends money on social programs. Any is too much.
2. Not my problem.
3. Again, poor planning, and people living beyond their means. Not my problem.
4. 2.6 million people held full time jobs? I think you really need to check your source. There's more full time positions than that in less than two states.
5. Get a better job. Not my problem.
You're right, it won't solve it. That still doesn't make it my problem. These people dug their own holes. I could care less if they climb out, or have someone fill it with concrete on top of them.0 -
Grad school - it seemed like a good idea at the time.
And so far my only job offer has been for a full-time unpaid internship... 3: YAY.0 -

This is where I bow out of the thread. I thought I was arguing with human beings.
I stand corrected.0 -
Thanks for ruining the thread guys...good job.0

Poor people tend to live in clusters.0

Never assume that everyone cares about something just because it has a pulse and looks like them. I have no problem being generous to people that I know, and have a reason to care about. Just because someone is human does not mean that they are worth my concern.0 -
This is my life.0 -
Just realized I'm too old for this thread. lol.
No seriously, never think of yourself as poor. NEVER. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, a negative prayer, a bad programming for your "secret", I could go on and on, but you get the idea whatever you wan to call it in line with your beleifs. Watch "the secret" and you'll see what I mean. You can THINK yourself out of poverty or just keep from sliding into it because thoughts beget actions, beget results. Just like working out. Never accept defeat in any area of your life. Ever.0 -

You would not be alone in this belief. A large portion of the world, I would think, feels this way as well. I do not. And I haven't the language to argue with someone who is standing on such a vastly different plane than myself, at least when it comes to this.0 -
Poor in money. Rich in love.
Same!0 -

Funny thread turned serious.
This was fun while it lasted.
Peace.
Ugh, poor people are always leaving prematurely. That is why there are so many.

I have to cut the crust off my bread b/c I can't afford the fancy loaves without crust
Lol, my random fact learned for the day is that there are now apparently crustless bread loaves. Guess I've been scraping the bottom of the barrel at the grocery store :P0 -
Would you take Tech-Ghetto Fabulous?
Barely pay the bills but have to have ipod, smart phone, gaming consoles, a big t.v. (for the gaming consoles), and lots of techy gadgets.
Take me to the mall and I will snub the clothes and head right for the electronics.
We had friends like that. They were always tapping us up for money to pay bills, but had a house full of electronics and games, and both smoked like chimneys. I don't care what choices people make in life, until I'm asked to pay for them!
Hells yes. Can you send this to my in-laws please?0 -
Sleeping on a lawn chair reading old Tigerbeat magazine poor! No joke! Post master?0
