Sodium and Sugar Intake

What should my limit be for sodium and sugar intake when trying to lose weight? I have just recently started to track this, but I am at loss for what the amounts should be. MFP set amounts for me, but for some reason I have a feeling they are higher than they should be.

I would say dont look at it too much just try to limit it as a general consensus. Drinking more water really helps cancel out a lot of the sodium intake problems if you have too much. Sugars are just bad in that they eat up your calories faster so you cant get as much volume if you are having problems feeling full.

A new study just came out which said that sodium should be limited to 1500 mg daily. Now the reason had nothing to do with weight loss but health. That's not as hard to do as it sounds. I generally get under that. Now sugar is harder to keep within your goal. On sugar the best bet is to limit or even stop all added sugar and most sugar substitutes with a few exceptions. I can't bring myself to quit sugar nor do I feel the need to. But I certainly do limit my sugar intake and try to buy natural foods, not processed foods. Processed foods are toxic and where you get more sodium and sugar than a human should ever have.

I try to beat those numbers daily. Works for me. :)
  • good question! i think that the suger count is set really low and the sodium count really high, for someone who eats a diet which consists of mostly fruits and vegetables (if they are starchy). i would only really worry about the suger count if you are consuming foods with lots of added suger etc. As for the sodium i have heard similar to @goldfinger that it should be kept low for health reason and also water retention. x
