Lifting/Strength training. What is it ?!

Ok, so that question really sounds dumb ! But really , I don't know. Is it all about weights ? Or is there more to it ?

Some friendly pointers would be really cool on where to start.

My excercise is pretty hit and miss, I walk a fair bit. And I get in some lunges, squats crunches. and plank when I can. Is thus the right kind of starting point ?
