Fruit Syrup Concoctions?

I'm on this weird oatmeal pancake jag right now. The entire time I have been topping it when honey, but now I want a little change up. I found a recipe for a fruit syrup type concoction that seemed pretty interesting. Basically it was 4 cups fruit of choice, 2 tbsp of corn starch and 2 cups water, blend it all up and cook it to thicken it up. I tried it, but not on a grand scale like that, and I think I kind of did it wrong.

Doing the math, I truly did do it wrong. I did half cup of strawberries, fourth cup water and one tbsp corn starch. That's what came out. It wasn't bad but it wasn't what I was thinking. When I think syrup, I think of a translucent, thick fluid of yumminess. That was a red, milky concoction of okay-ness. Anyone have any experience in what I'm trying to do? Any suggestions for different fruit or different recipes?
