Cooking Tempeh

does anyone have any good recipes for cooking tempeh? I just got some and it says it's 5 grain, but I've never cooked it before.

  • Slice or cut it up the way you want for your recipe, then steam it for 5-10 minutes before carrying on with any recipe you use. This will take away any bitterness or yucky aftertaste. I always marinate it and then either pan fry or bake it, depending on the recipe. I am sure there are some online, I know I use recipes from Dreena Burton and Colleen Patrick-Goudreau and have had good success.
  • I had tempeh last night. I chopped it up and cooked in a skillet with chopped onion, a little canola oil, and some salt free mixed seasoning blend. It is one of my favorite healthy foods.

Thanks for the steaming tip, I've tried tempeh before and was not a big fan. I'll have to try that method and give it another go.

I'm a weird one that loves raw tempeh in a sandwich or dipped into hummus, but here are my favorite cooked preparations:

    - Crumbled and fried with taco seasoning for tempeh tacos
    - Crumbled and put into vegan chili
    - Tempeh, sweet potato and spinach hash: dice onion, garlic and sweet potato and fry in tablespoon of olive oil until tender, then add crumbled tempeh and cook until brown and slightly crisp, then add spinach to wilt. Season with salt, pepper and some fresh thyme if you have it.
    - Buffalo tempeh: marinate tempeh strips in buffalo sauce for at least an hour and pan fry for about 5 minutes each side. I like to make a blue cheese dip with blue cheese crumbles and Greek yogurt.
    - TLT (tempeh, lettuce tomato): you can buy tempeh bacon or make it yourself, there are recipes online. I like to add avocado and sometimes a basil aioli to mine, too.
    - If I just want something simple I'll coat it in BBQ sauce and grill/bake it and serve it with a baked sweet potato and veg.

It's also awesome in Asian style marinades (try orange juice, zest, soy sauce, garlic, brown sugar and cayenne) and served with some steamed rice and broccoli.

I would wax poetic about tempeh forever. I LOVE it.

Melt some coconut oil in a pan. Slice the tempeh and cook for a few minutes on each side. Salt and pepper and serve with veggies. I stopped eating tempeh though when I realized how much fat is in it.

I had it for dinner tonight. I cut into slices, fry on the pan, then spray with braggs amino. I've also tried marinating it before and that made it yummy as well.
