Help me understand?

I've been doing My Fitness Pal for 40 days now. I list everything I eat. I stay at 1200 calories or a little less. I don't skip meals. I do not drink any sodas (which I use to drink nothing but sodas). I have only lost 5 to 6 lbs. I exercise almost everyday from 35 min to a hour. The weigh is staying same last week or two. I read that it didn't matter so much what you ate as long as you watch how many calories you take in. Is this true? Does the type of food matter?
