Shopping for produce not at the grocery store...

Just went to the produce place.... finally bought some fresh fruits and veggies,,,, 3 pounds of tomatoes, 3 pounds of green bell peppers, 5 pounds of bananas, 3 pounds of pears, a big portion of asparagus, 2 pounds jalapenos, some garlic, and 3 heads of romaine for $18.50, oh, and 2 big heads of cauliflower. ..... would have cost $30 in the grocery store. And generally, I think the produce is just as good in the winter as at the grocery store, but even better in the summer when they get all the fresh locally grown produce.

Do you shop at a produce store?

The one near me is always PACKED. I went in today and was 17th in line, with only 2 people working to get your items ( you tell them what you want and they get it. There are a few self serve items, but you still have to wait your turn to pay. )

I get my produce at the farmers market in the form of a weekly market crate and bi-weekly through local Coop group.

Right now in the winter we are not getting too much local stuff, but it is good quality produce.

Yes and yes. I'm fortunate to have a good one near where I work (Wilson Farms in Lexington MA) and near where I live (Russos in Watertown MA.) Both great sources of relatively inexpensive produce. It also helps to shop in season and take advantage when things get cheap.

This summer I'm planning on loading up on tomatoes mid-summer when they are growing like weeds and the prices drop at the farmer's markets. Going to make a bunch of sauce and freeze it in batches to use this winter. Might do some canning as well.

I get mine from the local farm down the road from me in season...unfortunately, that's only August to the end of October...otherwise I get most of my produce at Costco.

Yes...because my local grocery has crap produce (if you aren't going to eat it within 24 hours, it goes bad).

In the summer I shop the local roadside stands near home...I like to give my money directly to the source!

Absolutely! We spending between $25-$40 a week at the produce stands, for what would cost us at least twice that at the grocery store. I only get bananas at the grocery store anymore. There are two near my house and if one doesn't have something I want, the other one typically does.

There are quite a few farmers markets around here so I usually do stop to get my veggies and fruits from them as they often have a better selection and are cheaper.
