?Please Help, Complete Meal Replacement Shake?

I realize that shakes and meal replacements have been discussed at length here but I have a bit different issue. My 21 year old daughter is having major dental surgery in a couple of weeks, so I am looking for either a recipe I can make in the blender or a product I can purchase that is, nutritionally speaking, as close to a full meal replacement as possible, not just your run of the mill protein shake. As she is bordering on being under weight and has a ridiculously high metabolism, providing superior nutrition and keeping the little weight she has on her is of utmost importance while she is unable to ingest solid food.

My hope is that with all the folks here being so health concious someone might have experience with a truly nutritional meal replacement option. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Protein powder. Banana. Nut butter. Milk. Honey. Maybe some berries, oats, chocolate. Etc.

Put it in a blender. Bam.
  • My dietician suggested Walgreens brand protein shakes. They come in 3 flavors and I love them! Just picked up some more today and not sure about where you're located but here they are buy one get one 50% off right now

Beachbody "Shakeology" is about the most complete meal replacement shake you can get. It has MORE nutrition in it than your daughter could possibly eat in a meal. You can add frozen fruit or other produce. It's absolutely delicious.

    I hope this helps :)

Add some ice cream in that ...when I had my last dental surgery, I had a lot of protein shakes with ice cream and fruit. It was what I wanted, and it was only a couple days for me to be off solid food.

You could blend up vegetables, if she'd drink it. Google smoothies, there are literally thousands of smoothies and you can sneak in spinach, kale, carrots, cuccumber, all kinds of vegetables that have very little flavor when added to a smoothie. I even love an avocado in my vanilla protein shake. Good fats in the avo and in nut butters.

    This,

Ice cream is a great idea; your daughter needs the calories to maintain her weight (even gain) and get better. At this point, brands don't really matter. It's what you add to the shake that will make all the difference.
  • I drink ensure or the generic store copy of it. I have health issues and sometimes I can't do solid food for a couple days. Ensure works for me, lots of vitamins and the taste isn't bad. 250 calories each, with 25% of many vitamins, 9g of protien, 40g carbs, and 6g of fat. Gluten free and safe for lactose intolerance
  • Beachbody Shakeology....so many recipe options and incredibly delicious and healthy!!

I guess I should mention we are in Canada. We have used Shakeology before and could order it again if it is the best choice. It's just a bit of a pain because we have to make a trip across the border for orders. If necessary we could certainly go that route. I had hoped that maybe I could find either a recipe for a well rounded nutritional shake or a product here in Canada that would do the job and thought I would get some suggestions from those here who may have more experience than I do with such matters.

When my girls were teenagers and played rugby I used to make a protein shake for them with whey protein, yogurt, banana, berries and milk to supplement their diet morning and mid afternoon. That worked fine to boost their caloric intake at the time but they were eating other food as well.

It could be a couple of weeks before my daughter will be able to eat solid food and so I am looking for all the help I can get to provide the nutrition and enough calories to keep my little power house going and to prevent her from becoming a skeleton while I'm at it. If only her fireball metabolism was contagious :-) (Ah youth, I remember when my metabolism was like that.)

Thanks so much to those who have been so quick to reply, it is much appreciated.

Man, I hadn't even thought about Ensure, thank you. Years ago the doctor had us supplementing our daughter's diet when she was as she had difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. Ensure might be a nice addition to change things up. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

The nut butter, avacado and ice cream added to a shake are terrific ideas as well. Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'll have to switch things up so she doesn't get bored with having to drink the same thing several times a day for a couple of weeks. All the ideas are more than welcome. Thank you.
