Ok so i found a new friend at the gym today... but i have no idea what the name of this piece of equipment is at all so i cant log it into MFP diary. I'm going to describe it and i need your help identifying it and giving me the name.
Its a metal thingy that is about waist level. There are two ankle pads facing the floor. and another pad facing the ceiling where your torso goes. When you are using it you are laying face down hanging your upper body off of it... feels like you are upside down -- your body is in an L position when at rest. The excersize that is performed is like raising yourself up using your back to become completely parallel to the ground.
Whats the name of this thing?

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about here!
I've used it too!
I had an exercise that i didn't know the official name to so I just made something up and added it.
I suggest you do the same thing so you know what you're talking about in your log.
Also, I googled "back exercise equipment" and I'm pretty sure this is what you're talking about:

Whatever this thingy is called, I just kicked my own butt on it today, I think.
You position yourself so your upper body can dangle down, right? Then you can put your tummy on the pads and lift up with all upper body, lower back I felt.
Or, you can put yourself sideways, lean way down and then do sort of oblique lifts.
Does this sound right? It was rickety as all hell but held me, and I pretended to stretch out while I looked for a name on the apparatus.
My form was horrible so I need to watch people on it more, and I saw potential if I maybe hold a kettleball or a slider weight or something, but I kept thinking I'd topple over onto my head.0 -

You are with me, cool.
I have seen people do so many things with this, last was a couple girls with kettle balls doing what looked like oblique lift type of moves.
I didn't like the one at my gym; it was really wonky and I couldn't quite get comfy with it. Then I was worried I'd topple over on my head and the whole thing is squeaking like crazy the whole time. I could see where a spotter would be good.
Still felt me sidies, but it's 8 hours later and no soreness. I guess it was a trial run.Whatever this thingy is called, I just kicked my own butt on it today, I think.

I started doing these back extensions 3 weeks ago. week 1 body weight. week 2 5lb plate on the back of the neck. week 3 10 lb plate on the back of the neck. didn't feel it til the 10 lb plate...I'm pretty sore. but it hurts so good lol! next week 15 lbs baby. my back is gonna be soooo pretty!0

Hold up please - you held the plates against your neck, with your arms place up and behind you? Can you please elaborate? I tend to invite my neck to the party when it shouldn't be.I started doing these back extensions 3 weeks ago. week 1 body weight. week 2 5lb plate on the back of the neck. week 3 10 lb plate on the back of the neck. didn't feel it til the 10 lb plate...I'm pretty sore. but it hurts so good lol! next week 15 lbs baby. my back is gonna be soooo pretty!0

Maybe it's just personal preference, but my recommendation is that you hold the plate to your chest. I think by holding the plate behind your head, you're unnecessarily putting your neck at risk...(but like I said, it may just be a personal preference thing).0 -

When I put the plate to my chest I lift up way too far and my head is usually bobbing front to back. when I put the plate behind my neck and hold it stops me from lifting past parallel and forces me to keep a straight line from top of my head down my back. I've seen it done both ways, back of the neck is my preference for these lower weights. I'm sure when I get past a certain weight I will have to hold weights at chest but by then I should have my form worked out.0
