Eating after 8 pm?

I know it is one of the popular diet tips to not eat after 6, 7 or 8. Thought I'd share this link:

Unless organs have started telling time its a joke.

They are just given a task to do, they work the same regardless of "time". The concept of time is just something we have invented to keep track of things.

Agreed with those above, I work overnights and sometimes in the day- So I would be screwed up if I couldn't eat after 8pm.

^^ This. It's utter bull. As long as you stay within your calorie limit for the day. Your body doesn't care when you eat.

I work third shift and sleep all day. About 90% of my meals are after 8pm. Surprisingly, I've lost weight and am certainly not fat. Silly mice...how dare they try to dictate what my human body will do with calories?

Given that people in most Mediterranean cultures usually eat after 8 anyway, I always thought this advice made no sense :-)

I eat after 8pm, even after 10pm, all the time and I've lost over 50 pounds. Like my metabolism shuts down at a specific point on the clock. You burn calories sleeping also, it's when your body heals and recharges and yes, that takes energy.

I think I can see where this myth started. If I eat a large meal late in the day, then step on the scale right away in the morning, it'll show a higher number than if I hadn't eaten late. But that doesn't mean that eating late caused me to gain, or lose more slowly. It simply means there is still some food left in my belly. It's the same reason you weigh more at the end of the day than at the beginning. It's only common sense.
  • Sure; warrior diet.

My thought is that this advice might be rooted in the idea that before the advent of electricity and modern electronics, eating was constrained by the number of daylight hours where people could sit at a table, eat as a social activity, and clean up after the fact. That limited most people to an 8-hour window for eating meals. With the introduction of artificial light, eating hours were being extended past daylight hours. I recently read in Men's Health that a study showed when use of artificial light became more common, average body weight began to increase. Then, when television was introduced, obesity became more common than it had been in the past. This article went on to suggest that if we limit our eating hours to an eight-hour window, the rise of obesity can be reversed and many people will eventually return to their normal body weight. It was an interesting article with demographics showing a proportional relationship between the spread of technology and the spread of obesity in the USA. Bottom line was limit eating to an eight hour window on any given day and don't overly concern yourself with calorie counting, and your weight will more than likely take care of itself without extraordinary diet plans. I do limit my eating hours; I will not eat anything before 10 am or after 8 pm. I don't think the specific times matter; but I do believe the window of eating opportunities matters quite a bit. This strategy has worked pretty well for me so far.

Eat whenever you like, as long as it fits into your calorie plan.

I agree with the article - there's nothing wrong with eating late at night as long as it fits your calorie goal. But I think the tendancy for a lot of people (on a "normal" work schedule) tend to eat high-calorie snacks and lots of it late at night.
There’s nothing wrong with eating a light, healthy snack after dinner as long as you plan for it as part of your daily calories.

For me, I've found that I like eating dinner 7:30-8:00pm because then I'm not hungry and looking for some mindless calorie-dense snack later in the evening. But if I eat earlier, then I like to have a light snack that includes some protein befroe bed. I feel like it gives my body something to 'chew" on during the night, being well-aware that it may be a placebo effect!

This.. I think the study quoted for the most part supports the Calorie in / Calorie out model.

For me the biggest piece that is in the article [Note it is not a study] is the following:
Still, there are good reasons to be cautious about eating at night. Diet books, dietitians, and even Oprah recommend not eating after dinner (other than a small, calorie controlled snack) because it’s just so easy to overdo it.

If I am watching tv or in general being lazy late in the evening and start eating it is to easy to get out of control. Sometimes it is easier to just not do it then to control oneself.

I haven't eaten dinner before 8 PM in years. I usually eat dinner anywhere between 8:30 and 9:00PM and go to bed at 10PM. I've lost about 25 Lbs in 5 months. I didn't read the article because I assume it's like all of the others that tell me I'm doing it wrong because I eat late...they're full of **** and I'm evidence of that.
