Who do I believe?

So I have an issue with how many calories this app says I burn, and how many the machine's at the gym say I burn. EXAMPLE Yesterday I was on the elliptical for 30 minutes at a level 3 @ 4.5 mph. Machine says I burned 350 Calories, App says it should have been 700 Calories. (I counted what the machine says.) BUT COME ON that is a HUGE difference (TWICE as much). To add to the confusion some one told me they are BOTH wrong. App is an estimate and machine might not be calibrated correctly. HHHHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPP.

The problem with estimating calories burned is that it's all dependent on your age, sex, weight, height, metabolism and the intensity of how hard you are working. These are things that the website AND the machine can't know for sure. Lists of calories burned you find online can vary a LOT and the machines often (but not always) overestimate.

If your budget allows, I'd recommend getting a heart rate monitor (I have a Polar 7 and LOVE it). You input your age, weight and sex, then it uses your heart rate to calculate an estimated calorie burn. Nothing is 100% accurate, but this gets pretty close.

Until then, I'd err on the side of caution and go with the lower number.
