Scared of lifting weights?

I NEVER see any posts from girls who lift weights, and it bums me out. I seems like a lot of women are sort of scared of going heavy (that's not to say all women are, so don't bite my head off guys!) but basically I just want to know, for those that are wary of the weight rack.... why?

(also if you are a fan of lifting things up and putting them down.. friend me! )

Yeah, I don't think anyone on here lifts. You might need to look for another site to meet others who do. Good luck.

I don't drip anything but sweat and tears from doing workout dvds. THAT'S what us mfp peeps do. All. Day. Long.

    LOL

i just started lifting...like last week....and I LOVE IT!!! its so addicting. i am by no means weight-training-savvy, i just read up on it (here and other sites) and watched some how-to's on youtube, tried it out at the gym with some help from the ppl that work there, and WOW i love it! i was so ignorant on the topic that i had to google the terms "deadlift", "curl ups", "kickbacks"...i was like wth does that mean???

i NEED some lifting friends!! but please be gentle, im just a beginner :D
  • I have an irrational fear that when I'm putting the bar over my head and onto my back for squats that I'll smack the top of my head with the barbell...hence why I only squat with two 10 pound discs (or whatever they're called).

I can't afford a personal trainer, but I've started going to weight training classes (Body Pump), and with the instructor around it's way more comfortable and I'm less "scared."
  • Ehhh honestly I just don't like strength training. It bores me to tears. I try to sneak in pilates on the side but really, strength training just doesn't appeal to me.

No. There are plenty of ladies who lift, and lift heavy at that. Use the search feature and you will find more information than you can read in a night.

I enjoy weight training, but I'm always concerned that my form isn't good enough for really heavy lifting. I've hurt myself numerous time due to poor form (learning hurts...) and more weight seems like more injury risk, if that makes sense. But I'm working on form so I can up the weight :)

You could always use a squat rack (if you can manage 45 lb). Pretty hard to hit your head on that, since it's resting on hooks until you get under and lift it.

Wait till your old like me and you worry about things like bone density. Strength training will become VERY attractive at that point in your life. :-)

Nope, no women here have ever picked up a weight. There aren't dozens of threads a day on the topic either. Nothing to see here.
  • Girls cannot bulk they do not have the testosterone!!!!! Doing low reps of heavy weights will transform the shape of your body and is great for weight loss! They also help you burn calories post-workout.

In saying that, i do heavy weights.

You shouldn't be starting a squat set by having to pick the bar up over your head to begin with. At least not if you're actually lifting heavy weight.

    is this just fantasy?
  • I tend to stay away from weights. Not trying to get that "bulky" look.
  • Jeez. This is why I rarely use this forum. No need to be rude guys. I guess I just haven't seen many of those topics. All I see is cardio/light weight lifting threads. I don't come on here much. MY APOLOGIES!

And some women are legitimately afraid of bulking, that's more what I was looking to discuss. But anyways.

edit: and can we note I didn't say women on here don't lift? I said I never see it.
and I said if you DO lift, I'd like to be friends on here.
not have you jump down my throat.

ladies the free weight section is open to all of you ...unless you eat breakfast regularly then you are banned :)

oh and there are no lifters on here...that too ...
  • Just giving you a hard time. This might not be the best place to find others who train very heavy. I think it is less of a misconceived fear of bulking up, especially on MFP than it is most women would rather not exercise at a gym, and therefore don't train with anything more than light dumbbells, body weight or bands. Some may not want to workout in front of others, some may not want to travel/pay for a membership, or some don't have the time.

You've got it right though, lift heavy, it will never bulk you up to that of a caveman looking physique and does wonders for your health.

I'm not scared, but I did just start but it's heavy for me.
