Sudden weight gain of 10lb?!?!

:( I try to be very healthy. I am 5'2" usually 111lb. I'm studying to be a personal trainer & am very good at balancing my calorie intake & workouts. my typical calorie intake is 1200-1500 & I workout for a min of 1hr everyday. So suddenly gaining 10lb has caught me off guard. :( My clothes aren't fitting & I've tried 2 different scales Both showing me at 120+. I thought I might gain some weight from muscle while training but this does not look like muscle gain. I know that this is not heavy or a "unhealthy weight" but it's an unusual amount of weight to suddenly gain in less than a week for me. What is going on?

Replies

  • 1st: 1200-1500 calories each day does not sound like enough if you are exercising for 1 hour each day
2nd: Since you weigh in the 110s to 120s, you don't have much to lose so increase your calories and aim to lose around .5 lbs each week
3rd: It could be water weight. Drink more water. Avoid foods high in sodium.
4th: A little gross but from what I've heard, the body can hold up to 15 pounds of poop at a time. Have you "gone" lately? It may be that
  • Was it just today that this happened? If so, I would wait a couple of days and see if it changes and goes back down (water retention.. etc.). If it's still the same after several days, then I'd start investigating your diet, exercise, etc and make sure you aren't overdoing anything. Cause yes even if you were under-eating or even if you were somewhat over-eating you should not normally gain that much weight (either muscle or fat) in that little amount of time

any chance you could be pregnant?
that can cause you to retain water, stop you from pooing, increase blood volume, etc.
    or is your period due?

Water retention due to sodium intake
Water retention due to muscle repair.
    Hormones.
    Menstruation.

There are SO MANY THINGS that aren't actual fat gain to explain this. If you didn't eat an extra 35,000 in less than a week, in addition to your maintenance caloric intake, you did not gain 10lbs of fat.

Don't stress out, and keep going. If you are still not seeing any scale movement after another few weeks, check in with your doctor to make sure it's not due to a thyroid/medical reason.

    This.

Also, does your personal trainer study materials include any information about caloric deficit and muscle building?

Weight can fluctuate right up during your menstrual cycle, if you have consumed a lot of salt or carbohydrates. Weight shouldn't be your primary source of measuring your progress.

  • My weight ranges 107-113lb. 113lb being my time of the month weight. I drink on average 128 oz of water a day (I'm always thirsty). I follow a low glycemic load diet.

I usually set up my calories/ workouts this way:
    day1. 1500 intake/300 burn= 1200 Pilate's/strength training full body
    day2. 1700 intake/300 burn=1500 little cardio/ strength training lower body
    day3. 2000 intake/ 500 burn= 1500 bursts of cardio/ strength training abs & arms
    Repeat
I use B'days/ holiday events for cheat days

I have MVP & neurocardiogenic syncope so most of my workouts are based on strength training vs.cardio. I don't go crazy with calorie burning just keep it at a maintenance level. The 1hr is done in short burst through out the day to help avoid passing out. I also need to ingest a higher salt intact because of it. I've been on the higher salt diet for over a year & this is the first time I've had a weight jump like this.

I do not think I could be pregnant. I had a the essure procedure last yr & my husband had a vasectomy around the same time. Both were confirmed successful.

I took my measurements & I am up 4" in my waist size. Like I said in about a week nothing in my closet is fitting except flowy dresses & sweats.

I'm really bummed I've worked really hard to be in shape after my 4 children & now I don't know what the heck to do to fix the weight gain. I was just starting to see my abs again. Lower calories would not be a good option & more workouts means bigger risk of fainting episodes.

I do go to the bathroom regularly.

If you eat too little calories a day, your body will go into starvation mode and store fat. If you work out for an hour each day, you need to be eating more calories than that.

I ran your numbers and your TDEE is over 1600 calories-- that is maintenance at your height and weight (111), not including the calories that you burn through exercise. You should be NETTING at least 1500 per day. If you are not NETTING at least 1500 per day, you are damaging your body.

Given your health issues I would see a doctor for a sudden 10lb weight gain.

I think I would too. Normally I'd just assume normal water retention and tell you to be patient, but 10 lbs is a lot and since you have health issues it could indicate a bigger problem. Are you on medication? Some meds can cause sudden water retention.

Def see a doctor. If you think about the math, a 10 lb gain in 1 week is approximately 5000 extra calories per day! I don't think it's possible you ate that much over your maintenance.

1000-1200 calories isn't that low. Starvation mode just doesn't happen overnight, it only happens after long periods of starvation (sub 600 calories)

I do not need to be supportive to someone reporting a person for an attack that was never made. I am however supporting the person who ADDED to the conversation (not to the poster who started reporting people based on something that never happened).
