Protein Shakes?

I'm interested in finding out if protein shakes would be beneficial to my diet. I do Yoga at home 3 times a week but I am about to implement a large dose of cycling so that may be altered in the near future. I've also been considering lifting weights at home, squats dead-lifts etc. As you can see I'm still in the process of evolving and settling in a proper exercise plan.

I've only recently started to properly look after my diet (the main reason I'm using this site) but I would like to know if Protein shakes would help me in becoming a healthier and stronger person. If so, which would you all recommend? Additionally are there any cons to drinking these shakes that I should be aware of if I decide to start drinking them?

The only thing these do is to help you reach your protein intake goals.

It's best to get your protein from real food instead of shakes. If you are meeting your protein goals via your normal food than you don't need shakes.
  • How important is it to meet my protein intake goal exactly? Should it be high on the list of do's or is it something I'm safe to let slide? I do eat a lot of boiled eggs which give me a great boost to protein and I'm sure if I find other high protein foods to implement into my diet it would get me up to the daily amount. I'll just have to find out what those other foods are first.

I've been under the impression that the shakes will also help the body recover from workouts faster and cause less strain/pain etc. Is this just a marketing ploy I've fallen for or is there more to these shakes than just a protein boost?

Never let protein intake slide! You need protein to keep you feeling fuller for longer... your body needs protein for muscle repair, hair growth, etc etc.

Shakes, as far as I know will not make your body recovery any faster. It is the protein intake that helps.

You need to consume more than enough protein daily. When you lose weight you will also lose muscle mass in the process. COnsuming more than enough protein helps to retain muscle mass.

If your protein goals are still what MFP has set make sure you go well over that goal. This site sets the goal far too low.
  • Hrm well in that case I'll have to make sure I wrestle some more protein high foods into my diet, haven't met my protein intake recommendation from MFP once.

Thanks for the informative and helpful advice :D
