A night out with the girls

Me and some of the girls from work are going out tonight for our manager's birthday and I'm kinda concerned. I offered to be the DD because I don't want to drink (Empty alcohol calories scare me, plus when I drink I inevitably want to go to eat. Always. Alcohol makes me so hungry) but I was told that I have to drink because its her birthday and blahblah enjoy the night blahblah me not drinking makes other people feel bad.
Far be it for me to bring down a party by being the annoying sober friend (I don't think I'm annoying while sober but this whole thing is making me question myself, ) but at the same time do you think its right to have drinks because it's someone birthday? Do sober people really bring down the mood?
Do you know any tasty drinks that won't make me weep over empty calories come tomorrow? Barring that do you know any clear drinks I can pretend I'm drinking while actually drinking water?

If you're the DD, get soda with a lime, and if you absolutely have to - tell them it's vodka/tonic.
Or, do something stoopid. Your choice.0 -
Being the DD is an automatic pass. They should thank you.0

I always drink malibu & diet coke, then I can alternate with just the soda. The carbonation makes me feel fuller0

I don't drink, so I'm always the DD. If that makes them sad, so be it. I'm not drinking. I can still have fun, and at the end of the night I'll walk them to their door if they need it. They should thank you.0

This sums up how i feel, but the general idea seems to be "we'll just.get a taxi!"
I don't want to pay for a taxi. I'd rather stay sober and keep the thirty dollars, honestly.0 -
If they can't have fun because you aren't drinking that's their problem.
Don't go.0 -
I do drink, but anyone pushing a DD to drink is an idiot. That person would push me (or any other DD) to drink only once and I wouldn't be going back out with that person.0

^^^^^^^This!
And if that doesn't work show them a picture of me and that is who they will be seeing if they get stopped!0 -
soda water and a lime!0

If you don't want to drink don't. If they can't accept your decision then you probably shouldn't go.0

I'm kinda leaning towards not going at the moment though a stubborn part of me doesn't want to confirm that I'm no fun because of my new diet. I'd like to go, but I'm too old for peer pressure. And i hate taxis, lol.0 -

OH yeah drinking and driving isn't cool. They should embrace the idea of having a DD PLUS the fun you have of watching them act drunk and take pictures. Someone has to be sober enough to post them on Facebook :P0 -
Just say you don't want to drink. And then don't drink. You CAN have fun sober.0
-
Just have club soda with a lime. Once the party gets going, they won't even be concerned with what you are drinking.0

They'll get over you not drinking after an hour of being out. They'll probably try to convince you but just stand your ground - you'll feel better for it in the morning... as opposed to being annoyed at yourself for eating a kebab or something at 3am! Just laugh it off and tell them no with a smile, they will move onto something else.
Good luck!0 -

No one should be pressured to drink period.0 -
Bump being their DD. If they are giving you a hard time- either don't go or go and still make them take a cab! I went thru about a year of being DD b/c of my diet. I, like you, didn't want the empty calories. After about a year I got tired of being the DD and started researching low calorie drinks. Skinnygirl margaritas are good and pack less than 100 calories.
If you do decide to go and decide you want a drink there are drinks out there that don't KILL with calories. Rum and Diet Coke has about 100 calories. Get a wine sprizter for under 100 calories. Mimosas are my fav... you can get them for around 100 calories as well.
Either way- rock the night!0 -

If it's that you don't want to drink alcohol then just order regular soda drinks. To be honest, once your friends start getting drunk they wont really notice if you are sober!
I personally don't think sober people bring the mood down if I am out drinking, nor do I think when I have remained sober that I have brought the mood down. I think it's just because when people are drunk they can make fools out of themselves and when everyone around them is drunk it's more comfortable for them as they hope their friends wont remember! Haha.\
The only drinks you really need to stay away from in my opinion is sugary cocktails and beer. When I go out drinking, I try to stick to wine or mixers. But I don't go out drinking very often and I don't drink alcohol unless I am out socialising (e.g. I don't drink a random glass of wine during the week with dinner, etc.) so I allow myself calories from drinking because it's a "treat" for me.
If you want something really low calorie I know a lot of women who watch their calories with alcohol will have gin & slim line tonic.0 -
I guess I have a different take on this.
A) NO ONE should force you to drink if you don't want to, ever!
Being a DD is normally a good pass, so I'm surprised they're giving you trouble.
BUT
C) They may be pressuring you because they feel like you are no fun on your diet. During this process you'll want to make changes that you can maintain for life. I don't know you, but not drinking because of calories sounds like it would be something very difficult to maintain. You need to learn to do things in moderation. So, if it were me, I would drink because I wanted to drink, but would make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, use my calories for carbs and then calculate how many drinks would fit into my daily calorie consumption and limit it to that.
Good luck, have fun!0 -
I always go out with the intention of avoiding sugary alcopops and just having a couple of drinks with diet mixer.
Two drinks in and I am reaching for my fav drinks and joining in with cocktails, it makes you dance a bit too so thats a few cals...
and drumroll for the worst advise ever but always works for me (haha)
If you end up drinking too much and you have been dieting/are not used to drinking as much anymore
you will be so hungover the next day you will sleep it off for 16hours+ and not eat a thing
so the calories for the week end up not so bad ;p
I wouldn't actaul advise doing that on purpose of course, but if it works out that way don't feel too guilty, you can always excerise it off a bit when you get over the hangover.0 -
It's always okay to stand up for yourself. Peer pressure from .....friends??? What kind fo friends do that? Drinking buddies do that, but friends? Check with you gut, do what YOU feel comfortable with, not what your friends want you to do. Losing weight isn't just about the weight. It's getting to know who you are, testing your limits, increasing your self-confidence. Rock your choice!0

I enjoy a drink but would never feel that anyone out with me has to drink alcohol to have fun its an individual choice and anyone that tries to make you feel guilty about not drinking is not a real friend in anyones books.0
