Good quality, budget friendly workout shoes?

Do they exist? I'm in the market for new running shoes and new cross trainers (or a better shoe you may recommend for plyo work). I signed up for a 5K training course that includes an informational night at a running specialty shop so I will likely wait and see what they recommend for my gait and all but thought I'd see what others love. It has been at least 7-8 years since I bought new sneakers, so bad!

and they are awsome. I do at home workout dvd's and it's making a huge difference. I used to wear running shoes from payless and could never keep my balance.
